2002 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Guettes

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Pronounced ‘Gets’, the shallow soil is quite rich and full of chalky stones. A little more (20%) new oak is used in the elevage. Just a little deeper colour again. The nose is primary showing real depth – cherry/kirsch. A denser expression in the mouth, tighter too. Whilst the previous wine was a little fresher, this is all-round more profound. The dryish tannin clings to your lips. Finishing strongly, this is a real vin-de-garde, and very good it is too.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

The same label has been used since 1791. Always ripens earlier than most other Beaune vines due to the vineyard being a little like an amphitheatre. A nicely forward nose of smooth red fruit, a little powdery and an extra black depth – there’s more than a hint of spice too. Mouthfilling, complex but a friendly package with a creamy edge. Long and very fine – I’ve bought some.

2002 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Dominode

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Thirty percent new oak for the elevage of this wine. A bright, medium cherry-red colour. The nose seems a little tighter than the Aux Guettes, but still manages to show an extra depth and width. A little extra fat on this round and concentrated palate the fruit guards well the tannic structure- a real extra level of complexity on the finish. Lovely wine.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos de la Mousse

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

This walled vineyard was bought in several parcels before finally becoming a Bouchard monopoly in 1872. The soil is rich and brown and interestingly the vines are planted in a North-South orientation (like La Romanée) – this helped to shade the fruit from the sun in 2003. Picked a whole month later than in 2003! Starts slightly musky before giving up very pure red berry notes. Very fine texture to this wine – real executive tannins. Concentrated with a lovely, long and creamy finish. 75% new Alliers oak used in the elevage.

2002 Colombier Chablis Fourchaume

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

Good depth, though less width on the nose vs the village Chablis, good fruit though. Gives an impression of fat, but there’s a really obvious minerality. Good acidity. Like a greyhound this wine, no excess fat – really enjoyed.

2002 Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

Whilst less forward than the 2003 Reignots, the nose shows a distinct family resemblance. Not just a beautiful depth to the fruit but also width too. It’s ripe fruit is very tightly wound and really needs an hour or two in a decanter. Slowly develops a nice coffee note. Very, very good.

2002 Bertagna Vougeot Clos de la Perrière

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Much deeper colour – almost saturated, also with a purple rim. The nose is less high toned, more black fruit than red. Fatter and more concentrated with a little more acidity and good tannins though not quite as silky as Les Petits Vougeots. More intense, mineral and complex than the Petits Vougeots – a real keeper.

2002 Bertagna Vougeot Les Cras

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red with a purple highlight – as the Petits Vougeot. High toned nose thats shaded to red fruit. Seems quite fat, the tannins are fine and velvetty with just a little dryness. Lovely red berried fruit, just a little more vanilla and very good acidity. I very much like this fresh style.

2002 Prieur-Brunet Meursault Charmes

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Very pale colour with an understated nose of faint oak and melony notes. Really good acidity and a little fat too. The fruit is quite high toned and supported by a slightly grainy base of oak that intrudes slightly onto the quite long, aniseed finish. The oak will of course fade to leave a well made and interesting wine, but it’s not so exciting at this tender age.
