Mischief and Mayhem

2009 Mischief and Mayhem Bourgogne Chardonnay

Medium yellow colour. High-toned ripe fruit with a hint of flowers. Clean and fresh, with a hint of savoury flavour plus a little soft texture. Starts a bit neutral but slowly leaches a little character. Nice finish.

A while since I tasted this and it now has a little toasted bread which evolves in the glass to gingerbread. Nice texture and lovely, lovely acidity plus a little minerality. A narrow wine in the finish, but a very tasty one!

2009 Mischief and Mayhem Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Forward, bright pinot fruit edged with floral aromatics. Faint, fine tannin. Quite supple with good flavour. You can certainly enjoy this today for what it offers. Very good for the label.

Aromatically deeper if narrower than the 09. Lovely freshness – far from a typical 07. Good structure and insinuating flavours. There is lots to like here, particularly as the fruit takes a slightly creamy reflection after a time.

2004 Mischief and Mayhem Gevrey-Chambertin Crazy Love

Medium colour. The nose starts very tight, just a little warmth, slowly it develops a heavy floral scent – in-part it’s derived from a little of the vintage character, but on a low and ‘nice’ level. There is some fat, silky texture, high-toned fruit, balance and a very impressive length that shows some licorice. Initially I noticed the ‘character’ more in the flavours than the aromas, but the flavours seemed to clear completely. A lovely wine, and indeed a very serious wine…

2005 Mischief and Mayhem Puligny-Montrachet Caillerets

Medium, medium-pale golden. After the Beaune, the nose is certainly of finer fruit and of similar depth, though less wide. Hints of lanolin and a faint, creamy brioche too. Softer, silkier, just a little narrower on entry, but on super acidity it expands across the palate much more impressively. It’s also very long with a more savoury element than the last bottles. Interestingly, all the constituent parts favour the Puligny tonight, but the ‘team’ performance is not quite as together as the Beaune’s. The Beaune has nothing like the density of the Puligny, and surprisingly seems the more mineral. Day two this is very ‘together’ and the clear leader.

Bottled end of February, elevage in 50% new oak. Just a little extra yellow colour. This has a beautiful, fine and complex nose that shows plenty of floral aspects. Pure, textured depth seems to whisk you all-too-soon to the finish, but balance is restored as it’s a very long finish. Not a wine of overt power, but the delivery is fantastic, eventually taking on an extra mineral dimension. Double-super!

2007 Mischief and Mayhem Meursault Charmes

By on June 30, 2009 #asides

A high-toned, floral nose. The fruit on your tongue seems yellower in aspect and shows an almost tannic edge. Lingering flavour and perfect freshness – a super finish. I think this is one of a number of beautiful ‘Charmes’ from the vintage – I like it very much.

2007 Mischief and Mayhem Meursault Gouttes d'Or

Bottled in March. Ripe fruit aromas with perfectly integrated faint oak and hints of mint leaf. Mouth-filling with an extra edge of fat versus the Charmes. Lovely crystallised lemon fruit on the long finish. Lovely
