dugat-py 2005 chambertin, telesales with a difference…

By billn on July 08, 2008 #the market

dugat-py chambertinMy phone rang in the office this afternoon.  Once the lady accommodated me by agreeing to switch from Swiss-German to ‘High’-German, it transpired that she had 1 remaining bottle (from four) of Dugat-Py’s 2005 Chambertin for sale.  ‘As there was such a demand’, would I like to bid for it based on a starting price of 980 Sfr the bottle(?)

In the context of the 2005 market, that is currently an ‘okay’ price, though as we can see from the entry below about 2005 naysayers, who is to say it will remain that way.

I decided to stick with my lonely bottle of his 2004 Chambertin – besides I need food this month…

the first of the 2005 naysayers(?)

one must read between the lines. “More red fruit than black” connotes a lighter body, and “lively and dynamic” hints still further at a youthful, bright vintage whose maturity will be rapid and difficult to predict.

I’ve been waiting for you.

John Mariani is the first I’ve seen, but there will be many more. Aside from disagreeing with both of his assertions above, it’s true that there’s a whole boat-load of love missing from the 2005 wines now versus the latter half of last year – even more-so than from barrel tasting. What John is missing (I suspect) are those benchmarks. It’s also time though for me to ween myself from opening these bottles. I did, however, find the Voillot Volnay 1er cru to be similar to John’s reflection of the basic villages (maybe I got there too late), mind-you, I re-bought a number of other Voillots.

As a side-note, Bloomberg has become quite an interesting source of articles in the last months…

béjot takes over thomas-moillard – updated

By billn on June 24, 2008 #the market

——————————————————————————-
UPDATED from June 23rd:
I discussed with some of the family; there is (was) a complex holding of many, many family members, so a wide spread of shareholders. A large (majority) block chose to sell, and that block was not represented by those that currently actively manage the company…
——————————————————————————-
Fair to say that this was a surprise…

Béjot takes over Thomas-Moillard
Owner of the Jean-Baptiste Béjot trading company in Meursault and of an estate of over 300 hectares (Chablis, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, and Fabrezan in the Corbières region), Vincent Sauvestre has strengthened his position as a key player in Burgundy by acquiring the prestigious Maison Moillard in Nuits-Saint-Georges. He thus ensures the continuity of this estate, owned by the Thomas-Moillard family since 1850. The two companies should in fact complement each other, both in terms of supplies and sales networks in France and abroad, giving them the opportunity to develop in parallel and allowing the new Béjot-Moillard group to become an important player on the market.
The estate, made up of some thirty hectares in Burgundy and 75 hectares in Languedoc, is part of the deal. However, the 35 hectares in Romania, inaugurated in 1996, remain the property of Denis Thomas, former Chairman of Thomas-Moillard

offer of the day, henri boillot 2007…

By billn on June 16, 2008 #the market

Ouch.  Much more expensive than Bouchard Père 07 (same merchant) – they are good, but they are not that good.  There are too many clouds around white burgundy to justify dipping my toes for anything other than an ‘early tester’ at these prices.  Boillot’s Corton-Charlemagne can be class leading, but given the poor aging of the 2001’s in my cellar…

2007 Burgundies from Bouchard Père et Fils
I’ve seen worse. The whites are not bad value considering the current impression of the quality – I last bought the 2002 Meursault Perrières for 59 francs per, but that’s an average 5% increase per year!

“wine is expensive and old fashioned”

By billn on May 26, 2008 #other sites#the market

Decanter are reporting that the youth of France are forming a disdainful view of their country’s vinous heritage:

‘Certainly the French youth are drinking less than their parents, but overall they still consume more wine than their American counterparts.’

It seems that price hikes, coupled to the efforts of the anti-alcohol lobby are having their effects…
