spring 2007 issue is out

By billn on March 23, 2007 #site updates

indexpage snapHere you can find the index page for the Spring 2007 Burgundy-Report. It’s easily the biggest issue yet, but as normal for the first issue of the year, the content goes wide, rather than deep.

I will answer such comments as I can until Saturday morning – then I will disappear for a well-earned (for my wife at least – i.e. no laptop!) one week rest.
Thanks, Bill

what’s next(?)

By billn on March 22, 2007 #site updates

Very little time to add things here this week as I’m finalising the Spring Burgundy Report. The deadline (tomorrow) is immovable as I will go on holiday (Saturday) so the site will in ‘stasis’ for a whole week. But I look forward to responding to your observations on my return.

Once back it will be time to start working on this diary page – despite my efforts to-date, I find it far too ‘generic bloggy’ so will see what can be modified – note that nobody ever promised improvement! 😉

Ciao for now

tasting time
Two days, 7 visits, 140 wines. 80% 2005, 10% 2006, 5% 2004 and some others…

I have to say ‘chapeau’ to those professionals that fit in 5-10 visits per 7:30am-7:30pm day. I think I’d be finished in a month because this (for me) is an escape from work. That said, it was one of my most enjoyable trips yet – always learning, lubricated by the ‘good stuff’.

I learned about: a monopole almost with a history to challenge Romanée-Conti (plus it’s very ambitious owner), about JC Boisset’s ruffling of feathers in Gevrey (screwcaps), how fast you can buy a domain in Burgundy (about 24 hours for the handshake), how to be successful if you can only explain Burgundy (M&M), a surprising place to serve the ‘Enfant Jesus’ and finally – just in case you wanted to know – that the 2005 ‘René Engel’ Grands-Echézeaux tastes great – you just need to know how to find it – coming soon in the next Burgundy-Report (after I made my order).
;-)
It’s a tough deadline but the spring issue of the Burgundy-Report has to be up and running by the 23rd March – because on the 24th I’ll be skiing – assuming there is snow!
Cheers

ringing the changes for the report

By billn on October 13, 2006 #site updates

comment picComing to the end of the 4th year of Burgundy Report, the format has essentially remained static since issue 1; there’s been the odd design tweak here and there but otherwise it’s the same. I’m constantly aware that this format could become rather stale; i.e. the (potentially mad) ramblings of one individual. To hopefully counter (or at least delay) that situation I’ve decided that a little democracy is called for.

From the last report of 2006 (in a little over a month) the considerable knowledge of the readership can be deployed – should they wish. Just like this update log, at the bottom of every, new content page will be your chance to comment, offer alternative views, or correct the patently false! Or even just comment on some-one else’s comment! There’s a depth of knowledge in the readership that no individual could replicate; winemakers, relatives of winemakers, sellers of wine and don’t let us forget – ‘enthusiasts’. Let’s see if some of that knowledge can be brought out with this change.

Typically just as I find what I believe to be the best technical solution I see something ‘even better’ on the horizon – but why wait(?), first let us see if it brings some value.

Weekly Roundup

By billn on August 27, 2006 #site updates

Last week was an interesting week, one where the world of wine critics lost a great writer. I was never a fan of Pierre’s blanket positions on vintages – he of all people should have known that a vintage is a shade of gray, not a black or white thing – but where Pierre excelled was in the enthusiastic communication of the facets of the land and the people. He’s returning to the commerce side of the wine business and I wish him well.

Nothing visible on the website in terms of new pages, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no pedalling below the surface! A profile of Tollot-Beaut is 98% complete for the November issue and I’m deep into the research aspects (bottles!) of a profile of the village, Vosne-Romanee. This week I will add another 30 or-so notes to the NoteFinder – I plan to do this monthly, but will still keep the roundup in each issue.

September is fast approaching; with it a nice dinner with a dozen wines from Leroy – going back to some ‘new’ releases of wines from 1966 as well as the ‘declassified 2004’s. While I think about it, there will also be the small matter of a harvest…
Cheers

NoteFinder Update

By billn on August 09, 2006 #site updates

I was reasonably happy with the first implementation, but three things were apparent:
1. The lists of producers and wines were cumbersome to navigate – at least with the solution provided.
2. The text entry for a text search was not so elegant.
3. The database has spelling in (typically) the correct French Рe.g. Ch̩zeaux, not Chezeaux. Anyone typing in the latter will not get the 30+ notes from the former!

Well 1 & 2 are fixed, but I still don’t have a solution for 3. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted.
Cheers

Label Info.

By billn on July 26, 2006 #site updates

This took a little longer to finish than I expected; as what worked in firefox didn’t always work with internet explorer. Anyway here is a semi-interactive explanantion of the info you will find on a bottle-label.
Cheers
