St.Vincent =2018= St.Véran

By billn on June 28, 2017 #diary dates

Yesterday evening, the venue was the the Château de Chasselas – it was a little party to celebrate St.Véran as the location of the 74th St.Vincent Tournante – 27-28 January 2018.

Of-course, St.Véran is actually an appellation, not a village, hence, the party was in Chasselas and location of the St.Vincent will be the in the neighbouring village of Prissé. It’s only the second time for a St.Vincent in the Mâconnais – and the (venue) planning is booked up until about 2030 – so a St.Vincent in Beaujolais will certainly have to wait…

http://svt2018.fr/

The clouds were gathering as I approached Prissé – French radio warning of storms across many of France’s départements. I shoe-horned my Scooby (car) into a place by some vines and walked to the château – drops of rain heralding the storm to come – fortunately the weather kindly waited until 5 minutes after the 19h30 start-time before the wind, rain, thunder and lightning hit – it was only a problem for the late-comers! The weather proceeded to put on a modest show, but we were spared the full tempest!

Because my January usually consists of three weeks in Chablis, followed by a few days in the mountains, I so rarely get to the St.Vincents – though the location in Irancy (2016) worked very well! But on this evening I got to show solidarity with the launch ‘party’ in warmer if equally stormy (I’m looking at you Irancy!) fashion.

Leading up to the ‘talking section’ was a first-class guitarist-singer, who I assumed to be Michael Jones – apparently a well-know Franco-English performer who is the patron of this event. This was partly wasted on the crowd in his first session – great riffs even a few from AC-DC punctuating the ‘songs’ in the style of Muse…

Then, during a small interlude, it was fun seeing a (conservatively) 60 year-old vigneron, dressed in black with his (conservatively) 25 year-old companion in a very tight outfit. It really wasn’t necessary to watch her progress around the room, it was much more interesting to observe the looks that this ‘pair’ got from the (female) audience! The man in black later picked up a guitar and so did his companion – this was Michael Jones, not the first guy! All was now okay with the previously skeptical part of the night’s audience – there are different rules for musicians 🙂 The first guitarist was ‘Tof’ part of Michael’s band, and they belted out a great set of songs that had the (at least) 100-strong audience in raptures and singing along – bravo! And even better – Scooby was still parked where I left him when I decided it was time to head for Beaune!

So, get down to Prissé on the 27 and 28 January 2018! – If you can 🙂

Oh, and if you can’t wait to add one to your collection, you will be able to buy the St.Véran 2018 tasting glasses in the shop of the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot…

mois des climats – to celebrate?

By billn on June 05, 2017 #diary dates

The month of the Climats

Mois des Climats begins this coming Friday as a celebration of the Route des Grands Crus. Yes we’ve all travelled, camera in hand, up and down the ‘RdGCs’ – whether in our cars, on our bikes or even via the magic of a pair of running shoes, but did you know that this year is the 80th anniversary of the RdGCs(?) This tourist route was created in 1937, running between Dijon and Santenay.

To celebrate this anniversary, the Association of the Climats de Bourgogne is, for 4 weeks, partnering with multiple domaines and institutions. Check out my link at the top of the page to see if anything is interesting – but don’t bother with the non-existent English page of events!

the saint-vincent 2017 in mercurey

By billn on September 13, 2016 #diary dates

mercurey-1The Saint-Vincent is a regional celebration that was created by the Confrérie des chevaliers du tastevin in 1938* and the poster (right) for the 2017 event has been released this week. It is a meeting of all the grower syndicates of Burgundy in one village each year, and their associated (about 80) small statues of Saint-Vincent are paraded through the streets, before the eating and drinking commences.

Mercurey 2017 has taken the baton from Irancy 2016 – and hopefully they will have booked nicer weather than was the case in Irancy!

I note that it is not just Mercurey that is the home of the 2017 Saint-Vincent, but also Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu (though usually Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu is mentioned in brackets!) This will be third edition of the Saint-Vincent in Mercurey, the others being 1962 (a great vintage 🙂 ) and 1985.

The organiser’s website is up and running, though without much info so far. They are targeting between 50 and 100,000 visitors over the weekend – 30-40,000 has been nearer the mark in recent years – but that’s still a lot of frites, and presumably some wine too.
*List of towns since 1938.

updating – just an average week – sort-of…

Well yesterday I opened the booking for the Paulée Suisse – I’m very pleased to see how it’s coming together. See for yourself here.

DSC06008Then, just for the fun (I suppose!) we had hail yesterday in Beaune – about 17h45 – it looked like snow to start with, but got harder! Hopefully there’s not much more of that this year.

To reduce the consequence of the weather, I found the Crémant of Collet highly effective! Made from Petit Chablis, it’s direct, fresh and very moreish without undue sweetness… Yum!

Last week saw the publication of my first subscription report of this year – from all my visits in January (now I’m starting to type up all my visits from February – ouf – no rest 😉 ) Anyway, this was the Chablis 2013 report – 34 domaines visited to taste – 50% up on last year. Not an easy vintage if you are looking for ‘pure’ Chablis, but tasty wines all the same.

wine faults seminar (ladybirds, ladybugs…?)

By billn on March 08, 2014 #diary dates#ladypyrazines

ladybird-vineleaf-1

If anyone is interested to join-in this, drop me a line asap – and I’ll pass it on – there are only 3 bottles of each wine (there are a number of wines) so I’m guessing it might be limited to ~50(?)

Dear wine enthusiast

The Circle of Wine Writers’ committee has been in recent contact with Bill Nanson * regarding holding a seminar on wine faults. To quote a fellow Circle member, Clive Coates MW, Bill “is a gifted and experienced amateur… He is more than just a moderate or immoderate imbiber of good bottles. He knows his stuff.” However before we proceed with this seminar we would like to gauge interest as to whether this is feasible. The details are as below and we would be grateful if you could let us know:

a: if you would like to attend this and can make the 15th May

or

b: if you are keen to attend such a seminar but the 15th May is not convenient.

Pyrazine in the Burgundy: could it really be the ladybirds?

Bill Nanson has had derision and support from winemakers in almost equal measure for his theory about the ailment that affects 2004 and 2011 red Burgundies, and the basis of this will be explored and no-doubt extensively challenged during this discussion. But it seems that a minority of people can taste and smell this aspect of those vintages – or is that simply because they haven’t been properly introduced to it(?) During this discussion we may find out, with four examples from very well-known and admired producers, some false positives, and some fun exhibits that may or may not support Nanson’s contention…

Date: Thursday 15 May

Timing: 1.30-3.30 pm

Venue: WSET, Bermondsey St, London, SE1

Tickets: £35 non-CWW members

We would be grateful if you could let us know as soon as possible, or by Monday 10 March, if you would be keen to come along to this thought provoking seminar (on the 15th May or another date)
