Michel Pernot on his recent vintages – 2023 to 2021:
Oh yes – I’m very happy with the 2023s… For the 2022s, we bottled them in July. Good volume and I’m happy with them too. We have more than double the volume vs 2021 – we had hardly any 1ers in 21 – but despite the extra volume everything is already reserved from 2022 – because we started from almost no stock. ”
The wines…
Always very good quality on average here – occasionally great wines – but this year not quite great. The 2022 reds were delicious..
All DIAM seals here, since 2017, a mix of 5s and 10s.
2022 Bourgogne Aligoté
From the commune of Puligny, close to Route Nationale in the direction Corpeau. ‘We dont know the age of the vines as they were bought quite a time ago but they are at least 80-90-years-old and always with a small yield.’
Nice high citrus tones with and edge of creaminess but no overt barrel. There were 4-5 months in barrel for this. Supple – mouth-watering – that’s a nice balance of intensity and mouth-watering flavour, holding on a creamy finish.
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Chardonnay
5 parcels including a lieu-dit Champ Canet which is next to the 1er of the same name and Chalumaux but classified as Bourgogne.
Larger aromatic made from 3 parcels- starting with a little diam reduction and then opening nicely. Broader, more structurally shaped – extra depth to deeper flavour – that’s a super Bourgogne
2022 Puligny-Montrachet
The big assembly of multiple parcels – between 55 and 60-year-old vines
A much finer, more direct nose from this assembly of vines that touch on 1er crus. Texturally lovely, more depth again to this flavour, a wider panorama. Holding with a stony extra flavour. Super villages
2022 Meursault-Blagny 1er La Piece Sous la Bois
François Frères Troncais barrels, from ‘haute gamme’ – 30% new barrels, the rest 1-3 years old. Whereas the bourgognes are all old barrels up to 8 years old.
More width to the finer nose – the extra complexity is obvious – that’s super. Flavour rolls over the palate, the intensity is palpable and still delicious. Super finishing – with a lightly salted caramel!
2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Clos de la Garenne
‘Always a little more power here’ – the clos shared with Magenta/Jadot. Planted in 1956…
Lighter, extra floral component to this nose. Lighter but also wider and more mouth-watering. There’s finishing ‘pop’ of flavour that still has some oak – but what delicious wine!
2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Champs Canet
More a lime style aromatic. More open, more fluid, though perhaps a bit less focus but delicious – and only 50 metres from the previous wine.
2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Chalumaux
A lightly spiced citrus nose – yellow citrus. Hmm – more mineral and juicy wine. There is still plenty of flavour at the core of this too. A calm fading flavour. Super – I just want the finish to engage me a bit more!
2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Les Folatieres
3 areas; Peut Bois, Clos and the hillside – 3.5 ha
A smaller nose but obviously more floral – the cliché of Folatières. A super middle ground between mouth-filling flavour and slowly mouth-watering extension of this flavour.
2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Les Pucelles
Usually, a little more oak, maybe 35% vs the 20% of the previous 1ers
A more intense aromatic, lightly herbed complexity. A panorama of flavour, with intensity too, framed with a juiciness – I’d be waiting for this – if I could – but that’s really another super-delicious wine.
2022 Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet
2 vines – 263m long rows – the longest of the domaine! Including Bâtard on the end of the same line
A more airy and floral nose. Hmm – broad, mouth-watering but there’s power here too. The finish is much broader and perhaps the most powerful part of this wine. This will be a little beauty!
2022 Bâtard-Montrachet
A large plot was replanted after the frost of 2016. Vines in both Puligny and Chassagne – ‘our only one in Chassagne – but due to the replanting it’s currently just the Puligny that’s in this wine.’ About 2500 bottles for the domaine.
Hmm – now here’s some extra aromatic impact – flowers and minerality growing from the core. Hmm – vibrant, energetic, juicy, complexity. That’s almost a great wine – it’s very impressive…
And how about some red?
Reds bottled at the same time as the whites. All destemmed as usual:
2022 Beaune Clos de Dessus des Marconnets
Lovely red fruit with a hint of flowers too. Power, concentration, balance – that’s a delicious.
2022 Volnay 1er Carelles sous la Chapelle
Hmm, again pretty red fruit but with more flowers than the Beaune. There’s less overt concentration but an extra elegance. I like the structure here the spine of the wine is certainly in place – that’s lovely!
2022 Pommard Noizons
Clearly a little extra colour. A calmer nose, seemingly silky and growing more. Fuller – silky then a little tannin. Finishing juicy – a simply excellent villages – so delicious.
