Marion on 2023:
“Really happy – it was nice to have the quantity and that was after we did a green harvest in July – so I’m very very happy.”
Marion on 2022:
“A normal year but evidently such pleasure after the complications and volumes of 2021 – I liked the quality of the grapes too. It’s a different freshness to 21 – there’s a freshness from the bitters more than the acidity – it’s not the greatest of the decade but it’s a very good and very consistent vintage. The balance is there to keep but these are very attractive young too. We will, maybe, start to bottle in the second half of November but starting with which wine? We don’t yet know”
The wines…
A beautiful range of 2022s – and in both colours too – I fell in love with a number of them!
Maybe bottling end of the year or in January.
Ooh – nicely incisive, clean, and attractive nose – it’s a fine invitation from this slightly darker fruit. Juicy, succulent but still ample fruited. With a fine broad finish. I think this a great Savigny villages.
2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Serpentières
More limestone in the soil here.
A more airy and fine nose – elegant – but not lacking weight. Hmm, here is a more open wine – there’s fluidity despite more material – and the complexity is very appealing. This is just a beautiful wine – more than excellent!
2022 Aloxe-Corton
From Boutières
Actually lighter colour than the 2 from Savigny. Airy and floral aromas – not powerful but there’s a fine invitation to drink. Today a hint of CO2 but open wine, layered wine. A hint more tannin – more masculine, faintly showing the tannin but grainless. Delicious again – a super range of reds this year.
Les whites…
Still keeping cork – ‘Were not really impressed by the DIAM tests that they have done.’ All on fining right now:
Fresh, open, really inviting – that’s super. Fine clarity and super silky texture. Pretty intensity and a wonderful line of clean ripe citrus in the finish – simply a great Bourgogne – yes!
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Cuvée Oligocène
More airy yellow citrus and a suggestion of barrel spice. Much more direct and mouth-watering – a juicy style to this wine – accented with some barrel cream today but that will soon fade. Super and simply excellent – this is usually my favourite of these two Bourgognes but today I’d be taking the Forgets…
2022 Meursault Clos du Cromin
Because of the richness of the soil the domaine doesn’t use any new oak here – ‘the terroir on the Volnay side here was once all planted to red…’
Direct, almost some aniseed on the nose here. Fuller, broader, super clarity here – quite silky wine too. A step up for sure – the finish is calm but long. I love this
2022 Meursault Tillets
There is plenty of new oak used here – but you won’t see it. The fruit is a little riper but in a nose that’s more vertical in style. Open, classy, mineral, complex, pretty bitters in this finishing complexity. I love this wine too!
2022 Meursault Les Clousots
That’s another nose with an airy but broad complexity, almost suggesting a hint of banana today. Mineral, broad, silky, there is richness but not heaviness. Today I sense the barrel a little – but they are only 1 year-old barrels here. Lovely wine.
Lots of vibrancy – here the first with a little green citrus. Clean direct, very mineral. A Meursault of tension finshing with a complexity of fruit and citrus bitters – that’s really great!
2022 Corton-Charlemagne
Still in barrel, vines in Pougets (Aloxe)
A broader nose, silky, faintly cushioned. Extra attack – incisive, precise and a finish that broadens, not shrinks. Really proper grand cru and absolutely delicious!
