Matthieu on 2023:
“2023 was a lot of work. A generous harvest where the whites were lovely and we had a storm that helped the reds gain maturity – but we had to be patient – and the grapes were much better after the rain. I started in 2003; 2004 was a vintage of big grapes, and 2018 a little similar. We still didn’t touch the limits of yields – we don’t look for that – anyway in St.Aubin, we have a lot of replacements for the 161-49 plants that have died. We did long fermentations and for now, they are looking promising. The whites seem more delicate after the malos – but we will have a second winter in elevage for most of the wines – though the Bourgogne seems ready so will probably be bottled in the summer.”

Matthieu on 2023:
“A good volume – about 80% of the limits which I think is a good level. All the reds have been bottled, they were finished in March – the whites are currently being bottled.”

The wines…

An impressive range of wines – I probably tasted only about half of the cuvées that they produce – the quality peaks are those of great wines – and in both colours !!

2022 Monthelie les Toisières
Vines above Meursault, a new parcel that has come with some Meursault too.
A powdery red fruit – quite forward. Supple, with a hint of cushion, mouth-watering, very pretty finishing fruit – that’s the best part, delicate, pure and very delicious!

2022 St.Aubin Les Argillières
Just above the domaine buildings in St.Aubin. Vines of around 70 years old and below 30 hl/ha.
More direct – fresh for sure – a vibrant aroma. Lots of mouth-filling energy. Tasty wine with more depth and some modest finishing bitters…

2022 St.Aubin 1er Derrière Chez Eduard
Also old vines – over 60.
A more open and airy width of aroma – delicate and interesting. Extra width, more sour cherry, a little finishing bitters again – but finer presented than the villages.

2022 St.Aubin 1er Les Perrères
Much larger and a more forward and attractive aromatic. Broad, finely grained with tannin – that’s a lovely wine – subtle, delicate even, but still persistent in the finish.

2022 Santenay 1er Beaurepaire
Multiple parcels in these vines – in 2 terraces. Replanting parts with some pinot fin as the original plant material produces rather large grapes.
A fuller, rounder nose – good transparency. Cool entry but warmer fruit, rounder fruit, more overt concentration. Hmm – not the longest but this is, so far, the most accessible and comfortable wine today – the most delicious already too – yes!

2022 Santenay 1er Grand Clos Rousseau
Here’s a more focused width of red fruit aroma. Larger scale again with more evident structure – nothing hard or biting. A wine of larger scale which I’d keep 2-3 years before drinking – really super finishing energy too – that’s an excellent wine…

2022 Aloxe-Corton Boutières
A different aromatic style to this open red fruit – a little higher toned and with more stony fruit. This has a fine shape in the mouth – some muscle and plenty of velour to the texture. The finish is a little more direct and intense. A super finish that’s very delicious. Keep it for a couple of years but it will be no shame to drink already this weekend!

2022 Vougeot Petits Vougeot
1.2 ha owned!
A more airy, certainly elegant, faintly saline-accented nose – the fruit seems very silky. Hmm, a wine to sink into – gorgeous fruit with a fine and growing middle and finishing intensity – that’s a gorgeous wine. Beautifully balanced so keep as long as you like. Bravo !

2022 Chambolle-Musigny
A very different nose – complex and with more herbed complexity too – similarly airy in style. Hmm – but here is a nice, slightly structural scale in the mouth – framed with a grainless but still faintly drying tannin. That’s a very pretty finishing note – indeed, it’s a delicious finishing impression. Very lovely wine, finishing with enviable clarity…

2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Borniques
Just 0.2 ha
Hmm – now that’s a beautiful nose – elegant – large in scale and fabulous in detail. Wide, sweeping flavour, a tannin without grain. The middle and finish have some oak influence – almost heading towards coconut. But I really like the shape of this and am in love with the aromatic – excellent wine, potentially great – and with a grand cru persistence!

2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Creux Brouillard
Masalle selection here
Less width but still a silky width with a sweet floral accent too. Hmm – this sits beautifully in the mouth, faintly grained – more overt power, less visible oak. A more powerful wine but a no less delicious wine – it’s simply excellent…

Les whites:

2022 Bouzeron Les Fias
A vibrant nose with a notable mineral impression with faint florals too. Supple – mouth-filling – nicely concentrated. That’s a chunky, delicious full finish – yum!

2022 Rully La Martelle
Width, a slight extra roundness to this nose – the last impressions of ripe fruit. A small cushion but nice architecture here – some tasty finishing concentration. Not a small wine, one with plenty of ample presence.

2022 St.Aubin Le Bon
Some airy breadth with a pretty citrus. Hmm – a more juicy, fluid style to this wine which I personally prefer to the rounder presentation of the previous. I find this excellent…

2022 St.Aubin 1er Les Pucelles
Fine clarity and depth – a faintly golden citrus fruit here. Fuller, rounder but still jucily ‘active’ over the palate. A little oak and some more creamy, finishing elements but the fruit sizzles in this lovely finish – a delicious wine.

2022 St.Aubin 1er Chateignières
This ready to bottle. This from 3 parcels
A more mineral aromatic – nice depth too. More fresh energy fills the mouth here – extra finishing intensity – a direct wine here and I love it !!

2022 St.Aubin 1er Murgeurs des Dents du Chien
Also waiting to bottle.
Hmm – now here’s an attractive width of aroma – yes! Large scales but beautifully structured and mouth-watering. Detailed and intense in this finish. Here’s a great wine !!

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet
Bottled.
A nose of scale, faintly floral – nice. In the mouth lots of volume and good energy – a grained tannin adds texture. The best part is the finishing width where it’s very tasty…

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Le Morichot ‘Roux Brothers’
‘Bought these vines in 2013, always organic since then, certified in 2016. The vines needed time as was previously conventional but we’ve seen a big improvement with the work so far.’
Hmm – a nicer, more airy aromatic – that’s a lovely invitation. More direct, finer shaped – flowing, juicy wine. That’s a super and delicious wine – great finishing…

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Abbaye de Morgeot
‘Father bought this plot, it’s bottled only in magnums – it’s our grand cru. Back to unbottled:
A more vertical and mineral nose – fine high tones just add to the invitation. So wide, such clarity, concentrated but never heavy. Admirable finishing intensity with some chalky texture – I love it!

2022 Meursault Sous la Velle
Also waiting to bottle.
A fine depth and vibrancy of aromatic – quite mineral at the base – becoming really floral too. Vibrant, lovely energy to this wine – no shrinking violet here. The finish also, like the Abbaye, with slightly chalky finishing texture. A really excellent Meursault villages…

2022 Meursault 1er Clos des Poruzots
50 year-old vines. Also in mass waiting to bottle.
Airy top notes but plenty of citrus impact in support – like the Sous la Velle, growing more floral with air. Structure, depth, growing intensity – and what a clarity of flavour in this intensity too. I love it – and that’s potentially a great Poruzots.
