The domaine is having some work done so we tasted in a temporary building – but their shop is still open. This domaine has now transitioned to some new labels – ‘a transition of image‘ – and all wines in 2020 have moved to DIAM seals. They also now have 5 grand crus – all sealed with DIAM5 and wax…
On 2021/2020:
“As for this year’s frost, it looks less serious than in 2021 as the vines began growing very early last year, a little less-so this. Globally, our volumes were not too bad in 2020; there was the period of dryness in August and some hail around Beru – also in August – but generally not too many issues.”
The wines…
As most years, some great values here.
Everything tasted is already bottled:
2020 Chevalier d’Eon Bourgogne Tonnerre
Broad, an open and attractive aromatic. Mouth-filling, textured with a little tannin, concentrated ripe citrus. This has plenty of flavour depth and is long too – burly but delicious wine with nice citrus bitters in the finish.
2020 Petit Chablis Elegance
Mainly from the vines planted above les Clos.
A slightly more chalky width of attractive aroma. Open, melting, ooh that’s a very fine PC – some green hints but as extra complexity. Beautiful finishing flavours. Always a high-class PC from here.
2020 Petit Chablis Vieilles-Vignes
Plateau of Villy vines from 1933
Narrower, deeper nose – nice energy here. No green here either, the flavour profile being wide and mouth-watering. Nicely structured wine. I slightly prefer the finish of the last – but the rest of this – shape, clarity and texture – is more interesting today.
2020 Chablis Tradition
The team here have a ‘presence’ in 16 of the 20 villages that can use the Chablis label.
More depth and concentration to this nose. A concentrated flavour that’s accented with salinity – deeply flavoured. Slowly mouth-watering in the finish. It’s a good one.
2020 Chablis Vieilles-Vignes
A large part from Beru – the youngest vines coming from 1970 but the oldest are over 80-years-old.
An almost textured width of saline notes and a warmer core of fruit. Mouth-filling in all directions. The finish is beautiful and finely mouth-watering. Really excellent here – a very good wine.
A new cuvée here. Lieu-dit of this name, vines above and between Vaudesir and Valmur
Yes – now that’s the best nose so far – deep and complex – and very attractive. Wide, tasty, complex with pretty finishing bitters. Really a great villages!
Start with two new 1ers here:
2020 Chablis 1er Berdiot
At the end of the valley between Blanchots and Monte de Tonnerre
A more composed nose – there’s width, some salinity too. Presence in the mouth but not more than the previous two. Maybe a little extra in the middle and finishing flavours though. A melting and attractive flavour profile here. Very good.
2020 Chablis 1er Butteaux
Also new cuvée here, have been exploiting these vines since 2014.
A modest width of spice – a nose that’s more shy. More direct in style nicer, silkier, texture too. Wide and mouth-watering in the finish – some flashes of excellence here in an otherwise very good wine.
More interest to this nose – some perfume, more action, more salinity – that’s a fine invitation. Complex, nicely bubbling with energy – intense in the middle and finish. A super wine – Bravo.
2020 Chablis 1er Fourchaume
A wider nose – more diffuse. Vibrant, nicely incisive – this is also super in the mouth with plenty of clarity to the flavour. Super length – maybe longer than the Beauroy. A super wine but, overall, not today at the level of the Beauroy.
2020 Chablis 1er Montée de Tonnerre
A more structural nose, attendant complexity, and an extra, slowly developing, complexity of yellow and green citrus. Wide, melting flavour – it needs another 6-12 months in the cellar but here is a fine melting complexity of flavour. Long too. Very good.
2020 Chablis Bougros
This to be bottled in July.
Not a large-scale nose yet one of fine attraction and subtle complexity. Concentrated, silky but still with a nicely structural shape. Generous but never heavy. A finish that vibrates with good energy and flavour complexity. A very good GC
2020 Chablis Les Preuses
Some extra higher tones with an accent of salinity – becoming more perfumed with air. Mouth-filling, a denser core of flavour but melting at the edges – offering glimpses of fine complexity. Potentially excellent but for a little patience – delicious as it is today.
2020 Chablis Blanchots
VV on back label
A core of fresh concentration, again with a good saline accent. Broad, insinuating intensity. Really panoramic today – that’s showing well if not yet revealing all its complexity. Excellent wine.
2020 Chablis Vaudésir
Here’s something extra in the high-tones – more perfume. The most lithe and mobile so far – lovely in the mouth and framed with a modest grain of tannin. Fine mouth-perfume – it’s very well placed in this line-up and offers a lovely mouth-watering, satisfying, finish. Excellent wine again.
2020 Chablis Les Clos
VV on back label again.
Shy but still the most mineral and saline of all these aromatics. Faint gas. Clarity and energy. Again framed with a small grain of tannin. Beautifully finishing. All of these will not just benefit from, the will require, some patience in your cellar. But that’s another excellent wine.
