Unfortunately, as I didn’t get to see Eleni & Edouard in January, when I got here in April their 2020 wines were being bottled and Eleni didn’t want to show them in this stage. So, my first domaine of the year tasting 2021s from barrel.
Eleni told me that the 2020s were a little down in volume “– but nothing grave. Obviously, 2021 was a difficult year such that we ended up with half a harvest – it was just about all of the possible maladies that were to blame for the reduced number of grapes – but we were very happy with the juice. I was worried that 2021 might lose some of its initial tension but, so far, not at all.”
Better news for the domaine, is that they will be growing to 8 hectares with the addition of more 1er and some grand cru vineyards – this will start after the 2022 harvest.
The wines…
A little earlier than I really like to make make notes but what’s clear here is the fine energy of the wines – not to mention their wonderful drinkablity.
All tasted from barrel:
2021 Chablis En Boucheron
This is the parcel that, for the first few vintages, was sold at harvest time – retained now since 2017
Hmm, here’s an aroma that’s a little spiced as well as showing some salinity. Wide – in fact, lovely width over the palate – very nice citrus bitters in the finishing flavours too. That’s going to be far too easy to drink!
2021 Chablis Les Pargues
There’s a much more direct freshness to this nose. Extra intensity and a more direct shape too. Nice bitters again – the energy is really engaging here – this is certainly very good, it could be excellent.
2021 Chablis Bas de Chapelots
A broader and more floral nose. Intense, this flavour offering a broader horizon than that of the Pargues. Overall, a wine thats wider and more vibrant in terms of its energy. Excellent stuff!
2021 Chablis 1er Butteaux
A massale selection of vines that are 60 years old.
Lots of gas right now, another wine that’s both broad and energetic but here with an extra clarity to the flavours. Supple, slowly moving waves of finishing flavour – here less intense but no less absorbing. Another excellent wine.
And for the road:
Aromatically round, just a little development. Great, fresh, structured shape – still some tannic grain too. Ooh, I love the shape of this! Great wine – and still such a baby too!
