Patrick had been travelling and on his return, he had to head off again, this time towards Paris – the solution for our meeting – a 7am tasting – and I provided the croissants!

Patrick on 2020:
I think this vintage is as good as 2014 – so that good! We started harvesting early but the skin maturity in our parcels was good, so I prefered this approach with the intention to chaptalise if needed, rather than to bring in over-ripe grapes.

The wines…

A simply super range – with one of the tasting notes I wrote ‘such fine differentiation with all the wines – identity’ just so much to love from this address in 2020.

“I’m still happy with cork. Deviations are more annoying than TCA as people blame the wine:”

2020 Bourgogne Aligoté
Vines from 1962
A nice aromatic impact. Open on the palate, growing in the mouth, then a super wave of finishing flavour. Simple but delicious!

2020 Bourgogne Tonnerre Butteaux
On Kimmerigian, a long, steep, hill in a cold valley.
More direct, impressive mineral energy. Broad, open cool-fruited another great finishing peak of flavour. That’s lovely again – and these wines are something of a bargain…

2020 Petit Chablis
A part from Petit Preuses and another on the plateau near Beines
An attractive reduction, lovely minerality on view. Direct, slightly strict but great shape – juicy delicious great PC – great finishing too, bravo!

2020 Chablis Decouvertes
‘Always late ripening but when the maturity comes it comes fast!’
Wider, still very fresh. Supple, a little extra roundmess. A super finish that’s direct and slightly cushioned.

2020 Chablis Terrior de Chapelle
Two parcels in Chapelle la Vaupelteigne – one on the plateau, the other near the cemetery. Planted in 1974 and the 1990s but most are from 1959.
Extra – thats a super nose. Broad, extra mouth-filling too – with super finishing detail – simply excellent.

2020 Chablis Terroirs de Chablis
From the north-facing slopes of Forets and another next to Butteaux. The last was only on limestone, this has some clay too.
The best nose yet – super purity and clarity – a great invitation. Mouth-filling with super energy, subtly reductive, very complex – great finishing.

2020 Chablis Terroirs de Chichée
Overlooking Vaucoupins
More floral perfumed. A more structural wine but nothing hard, really mouth-watering, practically juicy, slightly chalky finishing. Simply excellent wine again.

2020 Chablis Terroirs de Courgis
The thickest layers of clay here, planted 1956
Also really well perfumed – very elegant. Round, again slowly mouth-watering, super wine again.

2020 Chablis Terroirs de Fye
In Chapelots part of Montée de Tonnerre, but the villages part.
A deeper, more muscular and impressive nose. More mineral, super shape, wait a little for this – 12 months perhaps – but tons of class here. Bravo!
2020 Chablis La Butte O
Touching Butteaux – quel surprise!
Hmm, that’s a broad faintly rounded, highly attractive nose. Super clarity and fluidity to this wine that really marks it out – bravo and you can drink this while waiting for the last!
2020 Chablis La Grand Vallée
So from Pargues in this case.
Nicely perfumed. A modest austerity here but with great shape in the mouth, lovely structure too. So melting with flavour and a great finish – bravo!

2020 Chablis 1er Vaillons Les Minots
Lovely perfume again – really forward. Good structure and really a generosity of flavour. Extra finishing depth of flavour too – here you see the 1er cru – lovely wine.

2020 Chablis 1er Vaillons-Roncières
From Vaillons – the fourth year for this wine. The valley opens a little here, planted east-west – everything else here is north-south.
A less forward but still fine width of elegant aroma. Super texture and depth of flavour. Vibrant finishing as opposed to the depth of the last – very long – I love this finish.

2020 Chablis 1er Vaillons-Séchets
Here, vines on the vein of limestone in Vaillons, planted in 1961. The first-picked vines
More airy perfume. Direct, modestly austere, super structure here, vibrant too, super finishing – a wine with everything! Bravo!
2020 Chablis 1er Forêts
A little more aromatic density, rounder. Cool, also a wine with a haughty but still giving character – great again, with the requisite great finish…
2020 Chablis 1er Butteaux
From the Chablis side (as opposed to Courgis)
Opening with crystalline style. Ultra-pure – such fine differentiation with all the wines – identity! Grand finishing. Love!

2020 Chablis 1er Montée de Tonnerre
Extra complexity, if less aromatic volume though. More supple, concentrated, fine balance. Really sparkly flashes of finishing complexity. Very understated but almost a complete wine – super.

2020 Chablis 1er Vaulorent
On the road to Fontenay
Narrower, more overtly mineral nose. Chalky, cool, mineral style but growing with volume and energy. The finish widening and taking you to a different place – wow!
2020 Chablis 1er Vaulorent – 4 Chemins
South-facing
A little riper fruit. Almost a Grand Cru style and depth to these flavours- bravo, what a wine!

2020 Chablis Les Clos
Extra width and depth but keeping an airy style. Density but never heavy. A wine that opens out in ultra-complex style in the finish – but it’s really a baby today – wait 3 or more years for it to properly open – everything is here…

2020 Chablis Valmur
More open, more floral, subtle cooking spice complexity. Larger, more impressive scale, beautifully mineral too. Vibrant energy to this finish – that will be great!
2020 Chablis Les Preuses
Super mineral – a bravo nose. Direct, then so accommodating – ooh what a finish! Grandissimo!

And for the road:

Just a coffee – well, it was only 08h15!!

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
