Unfortunately, I missed Patrick’s 2021s – hopefully that won’t happen again !!

Patrick on 2023:
“Towards Courgis the flowering was less good – there was a cold current of air so it was a bit less but it was still higher than 22 – and in general so. I find a 2018 style with a bit more concentration.”

Patrick on 2022:
“Harvesting was an early start – 1st September. There was nothing much to do in the vines or the cuverie – we had enough juice and the fermentations went well – the malos too – all were sulfited before the end of the year.”

The wines…

As almost every year, such a fine range – I could happily take a mixed case from here each year. Plenty of GREAT wines too…

“I’m still happy with cork. Deviations are more annoying than TCA as people blame the wine:”

2022 Bourgogne Côtes d’Auxerre
There’s depth and concentration to this aroma. Ooh – that’s energetic and juicy in the mouth – very tasty – what a great entry wine in 2022.

2022 Petit Chablis
From vines above Vaudevey
A wider aromatic, faintly cushioned. In the mouth, this is also juicy but rounder in shape – not a cushioned shape though. This is also a very delicious, juicy finishing wine.

2022 Petit Chablis Fortis
This from ‘Petit Preuses’
Bright, this is a more saline aromatic. Wider, more precise, more silky too. That’s just a beautiful PC – calmer but super-sophisticated. Bravo!

2022 Chablis Terrior de Chapelle
Two parcels in Chapelle la Vaupelteigne – one on the plateau, the other near the cemetery. Planted in 1974 and the 1990s but most are from 1959.
More vertical – a fine and open nose here with precision and minerality – another step-up. Another juicy wine, complex, even a little sucrosity. So delicious!

2022 Chablis Terroirs de Chichée
Overlooking Vaucoupins
There’s a riper fruit in the depth of this aroma – maybe even a hint of lime. Some gas gives this a little fizz. But fine and precise finishing – another beauty and I slightly prefer this to the Chapelle as this is slightly less sweet.

2022 Chablis Terroirs de Chablis
From the north-facing slopes of Forets and another next to Butteaux. The last was only on limestone, this has some clay too.
A calmer width of aroma. Extra volume and a fine intensity to this flavour – great finishing intensity here – too – very different and super – I might wait a year or two for this!

2022 Chablis Terroirs de Courgis
The thickest layers of clay here, planted 1956
More open and complex aroma – a lovely invitation. Hmm, melting mineral wine – very different but the complete package with a great finish – that’s a great wine.
2022 Chablis Terroirs de Fye
In Chapelots part of Montée de Tonnerre, but the villages part.
Deeper, it’s a more stony aromatic. A little juiciness aided by the gas. More perfumed flavour and a very nice structure to finish – this could also be a great one if you have 2 years of patience!

2022 Chablis Terroirs de Fleys
A broader aromatic, particularly in the depth – clean pure aromas. Large in the mouth – concentrated but with extra fluidity that more than balances the wines. Chewy and intense in this finish – this is already excellent with the possibility to improve more.

2022 Chablis La Butte O
It’s in Butteax but the ‘villages’ part – this is as near as they can get away with the naming.
But a larger nose here. Larger in the mouth too. I sense a little barrel but it’s delicate the wine is clearly as good as many 1ers so I have to say a great villages! Yum!

2022 Chablis La Grand Vallée
This from Pargues – always picked towards the end of the harvest
An airy and attractive top note of aroma – an almost silky impression. But large and more strict in the mouth vs the Butte – but with a small cushion there’s nothing hard here.
Lovely wine…

2022 Chablis 1er Vaillons Les Minots
Fine freshness and depth. Another wine with a subtle suggestion of lime in the citrus. Cool, calm entry but beautifully supported flavours with minerality. Delicious wine.

2022 Chablis 1er Vaillons-Séchets
Here, vines on the vein of limestone in Vaillons, planted in 1961. The first-picked vines
Broader, much more forward and chalky nose – that’s lovely. Cool, calm & cushioned, the flavour faintly of oak today – but what a delicious wine – with just enough balancing energy. Just sooo delicious and it’s very long.

2022 Chablis 1er Montmains
A little narrower – here’s a nose of freshness and depth. Ultra-wide, ultra-fresh – this is a mouth-filling wine that jumps up another level in the finishing flavours. Simply excellent.

2022 Chablis 1er Forêts
A nice vibration of aroma. Lovely volume in the mouth – a calm and tasty wine – understated and very elegant.

2022 Chablis 1er Butteaux
From the Chablis side (as opposed to Courgis)
Also a calm nose – modest, but with good width. Hmm, this is nicely constructed, there’s a little oak in the background that rounds the shape but we still see the intensity and with balanced concentration too – not a wine to drink today – wait 3+ years – you will be rewarded.

2022 Chablis 1er Vaulorent
On the road to Fontenay
Hmm, more vertical and more complex in the depth of this nose. Large, great shape – architectural but wrapped in a cushion of easy fruit today – this will just sing in 3-4 years – it could be a great one – today it’s just a bit too easy – have faith bravo!

2022 Chablis Bougros
A width of freshness and some concentration. Hmm, that’s a fine impression – volume but not too much, energy but not too much, very faintly textured, very faintly accented with barrel – but there’s nothing faint about this finishing intensity – super.

2022 Chablis Blanchot
A larger, more airy style of aroma. Extra attack and incisiveness, more intensity too. The structure is modestly visible, the barrel is hardly visible. This is really a super wine!

2022 Chablis Les Clos
A little more floral style to this airy aromatic. Intense, there’s structure here – a more serious structure, almost an austerity to this that bodes well – the finish is very long, only slowly fading. Super baby wine – wait 5+ years.

2022 Chablis Les Preuses
Hmm – so wide, faintly floral that’s a lovely wine – and growing floral too. Hmm, layered, extra of everything, except juicy energy but as the fruit focuses there will be more of that. This will be a great one – if I had it I’d be waiting 10 years!
