Louis on 2023:
“We had a good quantity – and you know(?) – the wines are good too!”

Louis on 2022:
“2022 was just a little less volume than 2023 but we’d sign up to that each year. We had a much easier springtime in 2022 as in 2023 there so many treatments and so much rain – both mildew and oïdium were the 2023 worry – we used to get one or the other but now it can be both!”

The wines…

Always well-made and tasty wines at this address – it was no exception for the 2022s…

We tasted a different range this year, not the low volume parcel selections but rather the domaine wines – they are all domaine wines – more of which are exported. DIAM-style for most wines but not the 1ers, which use cork. All the wines bottled:

2022 Bourgogne Tonnerre
Really open – an almost pungent nose. Large scale, concentrated but with fresh citrus energy indeed plenty of citrus bitters. A little rich but also very tasty wine.

2022 Petit Chablis
A more mineral width of freshness. Wide, fresher, faintly tannic too. Mineral and intense in this finish, almost a small reduction in this intense finish – carafe or wait 2 years…

2022 Chablis Bienommé
A bit more freshness – here with the yellow citrus being more intense. This is open and juicy – it’s a lovely wine, also with a little zesty character. Strong and long finishing this is a lovely villages wine.

2022 Chablis Vieilles-Vignes
Vines in Fleys for this
The same fresh start as the last but with more aromatic depth. Large in the mouth, cool, complex, very Chablis – this will be super but wait two years to let it open out further.

2022 Chablis 1er Fourneaux
Extra width and more overt fruit style here – ripe but not too ripe. Cool, mineral, complex – growing wider and wider – quite contemplative, supple even – but with lots of nice energy, almost sizzling finishing quality. This finish is long and delicious.

2022 Chablis 1er Vaucoupin
Not the widest nose – but the most compelling – with a complexity of modest citrus and much less modest minerality. Ooh – that’s lovely in the mouth – scale, mouth-watering – super wine – simply excellent.

2022 l’Inexstinct Monopole Franc de Pied
A new ‘statement’ wax-sealed bottle and label for this in 2022. Even a 63mm cork !!
Aromas have concentration and a mix of almost zesty citrus. Hmm – concentrated, very silky, growing in power – I would say fluid despite the overt concentration. Opulent is a good word but not negative as there’s enough mouth-watering balance. Grand Vin for Petit Chablis – but you’ll have to pay the price of a 1er cru for this bottle but it’s worth it for the story and the history – and even the quality – in the bottle!

And a red:

2022 Bourgogne Vindemiola
In Tonnerre but there’s no AOC for reds in Tonnerre
A vibrant, easy, open, red fruit here. Modestly round, also modestly framed with a tiny but not drying grain of tannin. The flavour is far from modest – it’s delicious – airy red fruit with a nice velour texture. Just enough lip-smacking tannin – indeed bitters in this finish – very moreish wine. Far too delicious and easy to drink.
