Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gains

2009 Verget Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gains

This has a forward nose with a few herbs and decent, high-toned fruit. There’s plenty of flavour and a really good intensity too. I’d just like a little more acidity to provide focus, without this it’s a bit too expensive – both 2008 and 2010 villages will offer more value.

The nose shows lots of width with some subtle complexity. This is another wine starts relatively narrow in the mouth but gets wider and wider. Lovely balance and very nice indeed.

The nose is quite fresh, slowly widening to a pretty effect and with a little cream to support the fruit below. Width of flavour, rather mineral with a good ‘clinging’ concentration – this really helps the length. Very, very nice

Smells a little understated after the two Meursaults but is fine all the same. More concentration, less exuberance. A very nice insinuation of flavour in the mid-palate. Very good!

Bottled in January. The nose is more forward, showing hints of fresh apricot and a little exoticism. A wide panorama of flavours that give the impression of further widening into the mid-palate. Rather than ’stony’, this is ’steely’ and shows fine, lingering flavours. Super.

The forward oaky notes of its youth are now more considered and savoury. A little better balanced and more mineral than the 06 villages. Way more dimension in the mid-palate and a great finish

Elevage for the first time in 450 litre casks – and for 18 months. Pale colour. Wide nose though not so deep. Rippling acidity with perfect packaging for the mix of mineral and sweet flavours – it lingers beautifully…

Raised completely in one year-old barrels. Intense fruit on the nose. Superb concentration, mineral with a fine spine of acidity and many, many dimensions. Super complex and very fine. Yum.
