More reports with Anne et Pierre Morey, Morey-Blanc.
Anne’s son is here at the domaine now – 2021 was his first full vintage at the family domaine.
Anne on 2023:
“2023 – we are very happy – and we managed to make it with the same team as last year. We saw a little oïdium in the usual places but we were still happy! Two years in a row with a correct volume.”
Anne on 2022:
“I’m happy in both colours and with the quality too – the style, the degrees, the acidity – even in the vines everything went well. It was often a worry about something yet the result always came down on the good side. The mid-summer heat bought stress and it was hard working in the vines but each time it worked out. The degrees for reds 13-14° and 12.5-13.5° for the whites, and most were under 13°. One or two didn’t finish fermenting until Christmas but others were done only a couple of weeks after the harvest!”
The wines…
A simply excellent range from the team here in 2023 – the reds are certainly worth your time too!
2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Airy and perfumed but still with a lovely depth of ripe fruit below. Supple with obvious concentration. Broad and intense finishing with just a lick of almost grainless tannin. Give it 2 years – it will be lovely.
2022 Monthelie 1er Cru
Forward, floral, with a more stony impression below – perhaps a hint darker fruit – lovely perfume. In the mouth fine intensity and a hint more architectural in style – a very pretty finish. Faintly spiced, lovely wine!
2022 Meursault Les Durots
A silky width of aroma – tighter at the base. Full but very open – the flavour a little more fluid and and melting in style. Very nice waves of wide finishing flavour with a grainless tannin in the finish.
2022 Morey-Blanc, Volnay 1er Pitures
The most seamless width and depth of attractive – almost velvet-textured – aroma. In the mouth too, wonderful shape and fluidity to this flavour – I really like the shape of this – and the fine burst of floral-perfumed finishing flavour. Super wine.
2022 Aloxe-Corton Clos de Chapitre
A different, darker fruited, style – but with an implied silk. A different structure, larger scale too, the tannin is present but without grain but then an impressive burst of different style finishing – certainly for keeping a year or three before attacking but still a lovely wine – and clearly more Corton than Meursault!
The whites:
The Aligoté is the only bottled wine, the rest to be done with a Spring timing:
2022 Bourgogne Aligoté
A deep and fresh, clean, nose – with some implied rigour. This moves beautifully, sinuously, over the palate with pretty little points of intensity and complexity. That’s a really super finish – I love this part!
2022 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
A broad and attractive panorama of aroma(s). Smaller yet wider than the Aligote. A hint more creamy in this wonderful sizzling finish – it’s quite zesty here – another super finish!!
2022 Meursault
A Meursault nose full of white flower complexity. There’s impact and a little structure but also a classy chiselled middle flavour – juicy here – a large and very, very, impressive wine – simply super!
2022 Morey-Blanc St.Romain Sous le Château
A very calm, almost contemplative width of aroma. Mineral amd clean, but still with lots of concentration. The finish is fine and acidulated – very moreish. A deliciously crisp wine.
2022 Meursault Les Terres Blanche
Vines under Goutte d’Or
A faintly but vibrantly, reductive width of aroma – complex and inviting. More direct, melting and fluid impression here. The minerality like a baby Meursault-Perrières. Another super finish with a wide and super-attractive vista. Super wine!
2022 Meursault 1er Perrières
Not so wide but more power and depth – growing with air with more floral-style aromas. Really a mineral wine – of width and melting flavours that light tiny bursts of complexity like little fireworks – widescreen style but rather contemplative and discrete today despite the obvious power. Classic Perrières that will grow and grow!
Tighter top notes but broad and generous at the base – air brings a more open impression, showing some barrel in this case. Large-scale and not a bit fat – full and then really impressively finishing – what a super finish! A wine to wait for – but that’s Bâtardly obvious! More than excellent potential!
