Michel on 2023:
“2023 – yes, happy. The chardonnays were lovely. The reds had quite an enormous volume but the colours were splendid – similar to 22.”
Michel on 2022:
“In 2022 we are also very happy. We made plenty of wine from fine grapes – almost to the limit in the villages, the 1er just a bit less. But it won’t compensate for the 80% losses in 2021. They are bottled since the end of August – only the Pommard waits. The volume was really not bad – we’ve even a little stock!”
The wines…
Excellent to great wines in 22 – and looking back at 2021 even higher attaining wines. The ‘value’ Perrières if ever there was one – worth a special search !!
2022 Bourgogne Clos des Murgers
The vines in the domaine’s ‘garden.’
Fresh but with a nice depth too – a good invitation. Round but with vibrant acidity and a fine almost chewy juicy finish. That’s a simply excellent Bourgogne.
2022 Meursault Clos de Murgers
Also in the domaine’s ‘garden’ – 30 years older vines than the last – 52 this year.
An extra whiff of perfume in the higher tones here. Hmm, extra intensity – vibrations of energy like the last – fading slowly with a pretty salinity too. Tasty wine.
2022 Meursault 1er Perrières
Almost a textural impression to this width of aroma. Hmm – mouth-filling with super dimensions of flavour to this wine – holding an equally super finish. This is really delicious – I expect to see plenty of barrel in the wines at this address but this year – hardly a hint!
Harvested first in this vintage – 24 September and the rest of Perrières the days that followed.
More depth, and clearly an extra minerality. Richer, but wide and minerally mouth-watering, just a hint extra fluidity and focus. That’s simply a great wine.
Another look at 2021?
2021 Bourgogne Clos des Murgers
Silky, some width but still a little shy. Silky like the nose – fine concentration with a vibrant finishing acidity. Cut from the same cloth as the 22. Simply lovely…
2021 Meursault Clos de Murgers
Hmm extra depth – then growing also in width. Full, layered some richness but always with a mouth-watering, mineral balance. The width of this mineral finish is very impressive and long.
Average 65 yo vines.
Ooh – that’s got a pristine width of aroma – clarity – super. Richness cut by both acidity and minerality – a complex citrus melange. That’s a really great 21!
This opens beautifully on the nose – it’s ripe but soooo perfumed! Silky, shy starting but a wine the grows and grows in the mouth – Perrières-energy – top!
Le Red:
2022 Pommard 1er Clos Blanc
‘Clos blanc works really well in hot years, better than Epenots as there’s more soil’ says Michel.
What a lovely open clarity of fruit – beautiful – this direct from barrel. Balanced and elegant for Pommard. Completely delicious.
2020 Pommard 1er Clos Blanc
Hmm – that’s also a beauty – here augmented by a floral perfume – top! A wine to swirl around the mouth. Structured but not hard, finishing directly with a little minerality and a shimer of finishing acidity…
