Gros Michel

2004 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

By billn on April 07, 2011

The nose has plenty of oak and dark cherry, a little farmyard too – eventually developing high-toned aromas too – I see no vintage character, but oak can obscure that – all the same nice. Good texture; mouthfilling with plenty of well-mannered tannin. Long and darkly flavoured – a good wine for drinking now.

2001 Gros Michel Nuits St.Georges 1er Cru

By billn on April 07, 2011

A blend of Murgers and Vignes Rondes. There’s a layer of sous-bois to get through but below is good supporting fruit. In the mouth that fruit is ripe and sweet – nicely concentrated too. Tarry, staining flavours that are very long indeed. This needs a couple more years in the cellar but it’s frankly excellent.

2007 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées

Deep and aromatic with herbs over tight red fruit. Concentrated with plenty of tannin. A good mid-plate punch and flavours that fade well. Short note, but good wine.

Deep and less floral than the ‘Vosne’, but again quite an intense nose. In the mouth there’s also intensity of flavour and reasonable tannin behind it. The acidity is just a little bright and there’s plenty of oak on the finish.

Medium cherry red. The oak is showing on the nose, plus high toned redcurrants. Red fruit on the creamy palate. Smooth tannins – a good wine.

1999 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red. A little spice and a little less oak but still some toast, hard to get at much else. Red fruit with good acidity and smooth tannin – comes across a little firm but also comes across very young.

1998 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium cherry red. Similar toast to the 1999 with a little blacker fruit. Lovely fruit with well mannered but grippy tannins – perfect acidity. Very good.

1997 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium, medium-plus cherry red with a little amber. The oak is barely detectable together with black and red fruit pies. Excellent fruit and depth with good acidity. Starting to drink now.

1996 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus with no fading again well integrated oak and fruit shaded to black. Less forward and firmer than 1997. Very good acidity and well mannered tannins – very young still.
