coche-dury, meo-camuzet, romanee-conti

Update 6.2.2007(2.2.2007)billn

Could it be the hyphen in the names?

The wines are too expensive – there’s no argument – but they offer the opportunity to deliver something truly sublime. Last night it was multiple Coche and Meo washed down with a bottle of Armand Rousseau. Today it was the 2004 reds from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti – most weeks are not like this!

I will probably wait for the next ‘issue’ to give you the notes – otherwise it will be a very thin edition! But despite a number of older Coche wines, only one of them really ‘hooked’ me, and that was a villages. The Meo’s were very good, the Rousseau even better, but the DRC’s are a dream to anyone who wants to make their opinion known: if you’re a believer, they are elegant and transparent, and they are guaranteed to improve for 20+ years. If you’re a non-believer, they are light, insipid and have no chance to get better – everyone’s a winner!

By the way, I’m a believer…

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?

Well Bill it would be nice to be a believer, I guess that for a lot of us we will have to make do with being a day dream believer !

My drinking knowledge of the DRC is restricted to a
1986 Romanee Conti in 2001 – not impressed
1993 Richebourg in 2004 – very impressed complete Pinot
1975 Romanee St Vivant in 1997 – not Richebourg but very good
1996 La Tache still awaiting the fatefull opening
Just need to save my pennies for the Montrachet !

Well. I think Emmanuel Rouget is most overpriced “top” domaine
in the Vosne. His wine is not actually no better than those of Anne Gros, Michel Gros, Sylvain Cathiard, Jean Grivot…etc but price is insane. His village wine which is but not exceptional wine sold at $120 minimum and his echezeaux which is undoubtely one of the best but also no better or worse than aforementioned domaines+Leroy+DRC. His echezeaux is $400 which is very crazy when taken account the qaulity (why it should be more expensive than Gaja Sori Tildin even if it is eclipsed by
every aspect like structure, finesse, power, balance…etc) Meo Camuzet’s wine is expensive and his wine’s quality is same as those of Emmanuel Rouget with different style but not exorbitantly expensive though. So compared to Emmanuel Rouget i think their wine is not so expensive (DRC is very expensive but they have premium of being best)
