Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts

A deep core of colour, just the last vestige of cherry at the rim. The nose is deep and dense if rather bashful to start, showing little more than dark flashes of toasty, sweet oak – fortunately this remains an undertone before fading as a dense and primary deep red note comes through that becomes finer with aeration – I can only summarise it as ‘very sexy’. After wine #2 this is altogether denser, softer and with riper fruit too. It’s brimming with intensity and concentration – it’s a real mouth-filler – showing a lovely expansion in the mid-palate before slowly narrowing in the good finish. In the background there plenty of soft texture from the tannins, but they will need a few more years in the cellar to shrink. Everything about this wine is more fun and lush than the Jadot Bèze, if rather less tight and precise.

The understated nose majors on caramel/toffee notes at the start and actually takes close to one hour before it starts to release redder elements and provide a more ‘whole’ and interesting aromatic profile. On the palate this wine has been a little upset by the recent bottling – it starts in wild and disparate fashion, exciting but a little clunky. One hour later we have balance and interest – the main interest for me is the character of the wine; it’s wild, complex and a little grainy textured – there is just so much going on. But where is the elegance of other producer’s versions of Petits-Monts? This is more like a ‘down and dirty’ Malconsorts – a very good Malconsorts by the way! Don’t take that as too much of a complaint – I still bought some!

A dark and interesting nose of spice-edged damson and a suggestion of toffee. A subtle and elegant wine, with real depth and quite some complexity. Slightly grainy tannin is a fleeting impression before the acidity whisks you into the long finish.

Medium, medium-plus colour, looked really super in the glass. The nose shows sweet cherry against a cedar background. Fresh, forward acidity with a burst of fruity interest on the mid-palate followed by almost good length. For about 30 minutes it didn’t seem to hold together all that well, but time is a great healer, and this was quite compelling for the last glass.

More of a tasting recollection as this note is taken around two days later. Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is a beauty; impressively deep red fruit swirling with creamy notes that have a subtle vanilla edge. In the mouth the wine shows a classic structure for long aging; very good acidity, fine tannins and fruit that shows a real burst of intensity. Not the concentration of the 1999 and also very primary, but still it’s very tasty. A haunting creamy finish that is redolent of the nose – a very fine wine.

Not quite the expressiveness of the aromatics of the Fuées, but still, it is both fresh and complex. Similar to the Fuées in the mouth we are again talking about silky balance coupled to wonderful complexity. Lovely fruit. Another ‘buy’.

Medium-plus cherry-red colour. The nose starts deep and a little oaky. Given time the oak is replaced by a classic Vosne spice and eventually sweet cappuccino. The palate is first-class, silky, very round, real fat and tight though lovely and complex if slightly backward fruit. Nice acidity helps lengthen the finish. This has gorgeous mouthfeel and despite it’s youth I loved drinking it today. A singleton that forced me to buy some more (the eight bottles I could find!) and of course, before you read this! Grand Cru standard – Vosne Grand Cru at that!
