Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées

2006 Guyon Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées

Medium, medium-plus colour. High tones that are backed by faint caramel and a faintly spicy undertow. Certainly more concentration and dimension – lots of wine here – much complexity and very good length. This is super, only the price spoils the party.

Medium-pale red with a strong amber caste. The nose started with a whiff of oak before settling for quite some time into a dirty, almost fixed sulfur motif. It wasn’t fixed as extended aeration brought a denser red fruit that eventually became more elegant and redcurrant in style. Good acidity with quite some extension in the mid-palate – this punch is delivered with little overt density but still impresses. The tannin has reasonably fine grain but still needs a little time to provide a perfect texture. This is not a powerhouse wine, but despite the initially disappointing aromatics there’s still some interest here.

High-toned nose, understated but very nice. The palate is rather linear, but lots of dimension and almost good length. It’s actually almost good.

Medium/medium-plus ruby colour but quite a lot of development – looks older than many others here. The nose is of caramel, unusually a trace of spicy cedar and high toned raspberry and black cherry. The palate shows creamy raspberry and redcurrant against nice acidity and very astringent medium tannins – they’re quite smooth though. This is, perhaps, the most obviously young wine of all these tested and definitely should be left for at least 3 or 4 more years. Not a charmer today, but there’s plenty of potential.

The wine-list was a bit miss-leading as I was expecting a Thomas-Moillard wine – however the label looked nice so I took it anyway !! Deep ruby colour with no colour development and not much lighter at the rim. Nose is very deep with cooked fruits , black & red, though still quite primary. Palate is thick with well covered acidity and slightly rustic unresolved tannin. The spicy fruit and finish, however, are superb, a true multidimensional taste experience. Despite the rustic tannins and despite the fact it’s still January, my wine of the year so far Excellent+
