Romanée Saint-Vivant

1989 Thomas-Moillard Romanée Saint-Vivant

By on October 31, 2002 #asides

The wine was mature looking but with sufficient deep colour to make the age hard to determine. The nose . . . . . all chocolate and cherry liqueurs was really sweet, almost intoxicating. The palate, still has really good acidity and lots of smooth, furry tannin. Tons of depth and many layers to the fruit. The superb finish continuing to develop for the first hour the bottle was open. Wine is also about the experience with food; In this case the wine melded beautifully with fresh bread and a simple plate of Livarot, Reblochon (de Suisse !!) and Port Salut cheeses. Worth much more than the €58 paid – outstanding – and many years of life ahead of it.

1996 Confuron JJ Romanée Saint-Vivant

Deep colour. Closed nose, though a slight hint of caramel (Clive later said coffee). Very high acid, medium tannin. Very pure red cherry fruit, silky smooth on the palate. Very, very long – fabulous!

1996 Arnoux Robert Romanée Saint-Vivant

By on May 31, 2001 #asides

Deep colour. Closed again. Once more very high acid and medium tannins. Not as smooth as Confuron’s, but again very pure fruit – cherries. Nice length.

1996 Hudelot-Noellat Romanée Saint-Vivant

By on May 31, 2001 #asides

Very deep colour. Closed. Maybe even higher acid than the previous wines – but we’re still not talking paint-stripper!! Really mouth coating tannins. Not the obvious pure fruit of the previous two – perhaps it’s actually a little more mature and complex. Good length again.
