Meursault Perrières

Medium-pale colour – certainly looks okay. The nose is wide, showing soft fruit and faint lanolin with an even fainter citrus veil – a faint caramel note eventually escapes the glass. Perfect acidity, a little linear in the mid-palate and a super acid-driven length. Not as ‘giving’ as 3 years ago, but understated excellence, still.

It’s an understated but very fine nose – really lovely focus to the fruit. Concentrated texture – though not oily – beautiful acid balance and flavours that hold on for an age. This is a zen-like wine, you could lose yourself in a busy room while sipping it – I did. Superb.

Medium golden. An understated nose that shows a little creamy wool. The palate is linear – perhaps (old) boney – but very smooth and rushes you into a reasonable – creamy again – finish just a little faster than you might wish for the appellation, but it’s probably the appellation that saves it given such an inauspicious year and a maker with little track-record for whites. Enough for a last glass was was left in the bottle overnight and it was even slightly better the next day – not a hint of oxidation. Will make even older bones!

Golden. A honied nose – very Meusault, but less-so Perrières – wide with a peach-stone core. Surprisingly sweet with good fat and intensity. The acidity is good but very well covered. This is not the best Perrières I’ve tasted, it is a good but not a great one. As far as the value is concerned, however, this is by far the most interesting of this flight of wines.

Medium lemon yellow. The nose is fresh and understated, yet offers up many layers with a faintly creamy edge. The palate is concentrated yet also understatedly provides layers and layers of interest – I’m now regretting that only 4 more lie in the cellar. Lovely acidity and length. Wonderful in an understated way.

Medium lemon-yellow. Initially the nose is rather tight and undemonstrative, you really need at least 30 minutes of ‘breathing’ before things become interesting – then you have a much wider and indeed classic profile – quite lovely and fresh, citrus infused high toned fruit. The palate will not win an award for density, but it is as well textured as it is balanced and shows a very nice burst of concentrated interest on the mid-palate. The finish is reasonably long. Overall it’s a nicely mineral wine, both enjoyable and worthy, if not a class-leading Perrières.

Drank directly after Bertagna’s Charlemagne, which frankly towered above this Perrières! Pale yellow. The nose is rather tight, giving up a little fresh bread and very faintly minty high-toned fruit. Medium intensity but with a profile that expands into a good finish.. It’s very clean, with lovely acidity, your mouth subtly waters for at least a minute after swallowing. A very lovely wine – in isolation.

Medium lemon yellow. The nose is fresher than the Charmes, perhaps a little sweet lime, but there’s faint butter and a brooding, creamy base below. The palate is concentrated without being over-fat, it’s perfectly balanced with the acidity too. There’s a seamless ride from first impression, to mid-palate, to the achingly long, creamy finish. The wine hasn’t the impressive minerality of the best Perrières I’ve tasted (Roulot’s 2000) but this is a very convincing effort and one-third of the price – I’ve already added a half-dozen to the cellar.

I cannot lie, I was hiding away 3 bottles for a rainy day, but the moment (the party actually) got the better of me. Not much of a note as I was without pen – just a glass! The intensity is superb, this is an excellent wine that puts many a Corton-Charlemagne to shame. Not cheap, but worth searching for – now I’ll have to replace it – with interest!
