2005 Boillot Louis Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Medium-plus colour with plenty of purple at the rim. High tones of violets over blackberry fruit and faint earth. In the mouth it’s got reasonable concentration but lovely flavours of black cherry jam edged with faint oak toast. Fine balance and a subtly penetrating length. Not the ‘flash’ of many 05’s, and far from the best value too – but it’s still a beauty!

2004 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Medium-plus colour, only just retaining a hint of cherry-red colour. The nose starts with full-on oak toast which slowly, slowly recedes to reveal black-shaded cherry, faint coffee and even some higher floral notes. Good texture and an ever-increasing intensity as you head for the mid-palate – the acidity seems not perfectly integrated though. Long, with creamy elements. Overall it is rather too oaky for my palate (to enjoy) and there’s eventually a suggestion of ash on the nose, but it’s certainly a good effort with no green.

2005 Heresztyn Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red colour. Width and dark cherry fruit with faint white pepper and a softer, warmer core. The palate has a soft texture, currently rather bright acidity but a very nice depth of fruit in the mid-palate and finish. It’s another 2005 that’s not an easy drink right now, but the quality behind will eventually repay the wait – though I expect it won’t be short wait.

2006 Seguin Manuel Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

From 3 small plots that abutt 1er crus. The nose is deeper with darker, musky fruit. Lithe with good acid

balance – the tannins are more forward but are nicely ripe. Good wine that leaves you with a smooth coating

on your teeth.

1999 Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Medium ruby-red. A nose that starts deep and surprisingly oaky given that there’s normally a maximum of 20% in this cellar – but it’s short-lived before fading into redder, layered fruit overlaid by higher toned alcoholic aspects, maybe even an edge of coffee. In the mouth it starts impressively; it’s well balanced, and shows a lovely, succulent, creamy red fruit. Time increases the depth but eventually dulls the excitement just a hint. It’s intense in the mid-palate and you never really think of the tannin before it slowly fades in the finish – still with that creamy edge. Poised, elegant and a first-class villages.

2004 Esmonin Sylvie Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Deep cherry-red colour. Slight reduction can’t hide earthy, creamy blackberry and blackcurrant aspects on the nose. The palate is ripe and again very black-fruity – brambly – and with helpful acidity moves seamlessly through slightly grainy tannin to a black finish edged with cream – maybe a hint of coconut too.

2001 Bachelet Denis Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Medium-plus ruby red, but still hinting at cherry-red at the rim. A really impressive nose that starts a little reduced – but only for a minute or two – then red fruit, edged with mint, becoming ever-more intense and deep – wow! Fresh presentation, very understated tannin, equally understated in the finish despite being long-lasting. This is not a fat wine, rather a wonderfully detailed one. Superb quality for a villages, and with respect to its appellation impressed me far more than the Bachelet 1er of last week – possibly even better than Rousseau’s 2001.

Only medium cherry-red colour. The nose is full of toffee and caramel toppings to the red fruit – surprising considering the modest amount of oak that Jean-Marie uses. Medium bodied, quite elegant palate. Nice acidity and subdued tannin a tasty and quite lacy wine. A little remaining wine stored overnight sadly fell apart – perhaps not a long-term wine then but very lovely on day one.

2000 Esmonin Sylvie Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes

Quite deep, extracted looking ruby – still cherry red at the rim. The nose starts very dumb, given time it starts to betray a little oak but also quite deep cherry – shaded to black. The palate is quite smooth with good acidity and strong fruit. The finish is woody from the oak. Nice fruit, but currently trapped in a wooden box – I’d be interested to try this again in 4/5 years – hopefully it will be starting to coalesce.
