Echézeaux

2007 Gros Frère & Soeur Echézeaux

A sweet and nicely focused nose. In the mouth it’s full and intense and coupled to slightly grainy tannins – what a difference a few more vine years makes! Good length with plenty of barrel flavour. Good wine.

A deeper nose than the villages, but also showing less width and intensity. Super flavour – tannin with a faint grain and a super length. Super.

Width though not that much depth to the aromatics. A pretty red and black fruit mix, and super width on the palate. Very fine expansion into the mid-plate before slowly lingering. Makes a strong impression.

Broadly a higher-toned nose than the Malconsorts. Narrower entry but it fills the palate with plenty of dimension and faintly astringent tannin. Has a little more density, but not the impact of the Malconsorts. Long finishing with a little barrel flavour.

Fruit aromas that give a serious and very fine impression, eventually pretty red fruits. Really super-fine tannin that clings to your mouth helping the flavour linger for just that bit longer. More power, but today a little less dimension than the Suchots – will be very good though.

Medium-plus colour, both deeper and younger looking than the Bonnes-Mares. The nose also has much more depth of an obvious oak note. Soft and concentrated with just a slight lift of the acidity. Apparently much more compact in the mid-palate than the Bonnes-Mares but with equal length. This is clearly a ‘younger’ and more powerful wine but just a little less enticing and balanced than the Bonnes-Mares today. Re-reading this sounds harsh, but it was a very good wine indeed that I’d be happy for you to open for me

2006 Bocquenet Daniel Echézeaux

Medium-plus colour. High-toned and faintly medicinal aromas. In the mouth it’s soft and concentrated with an excellent undertow of structure. Super dimension in the mid-palate – it will need plenty of cellar time for the dark oak to fade with the tannin, but it’s very good.

2006 Guyon Echézeaux

Medium, medium-pale colour. A lovely, wide nose of spice, caramel and fruit. The texture is not particularly sophisticated, but the concentration and dimension are super. Clearly overpriced, but super wine

2006 Clos Frantin Echézeaux

Deep colour. Tight, a suggestion of depth but little more. Full-bodied, with good texture and very good fruit. There’s plenty of structure to resolve, but the finish lingers well and has a savoury edge.
