2002 Bertagna Vougeot Clos de la Perrière

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Much deeper colour – almost saturated, also with a purple rim. The nose is less high toned, more black fruit than red. Fatter and more concentrated with a little more acidity and good tannins though not quite as silky as Les Petits Vougeots. More intense, mineral and complex than the Petits Vougeots – a real keeper.

2002 Bertagna Vougeot Les Cras

Medium-plus cherry red with a purple highlight – as the Petits Vougeot. High toned nose thats shaded to red fruit. Seems quite fat, the tannins are fine and velvetty with just a little dryness. Lovely red berried fruit, just a little more vanilla and very good acidity. I very much like this fresh style.

2002 Bertagna Clos de Vougeot

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Mainly from 70 year-old vines. Almost as dark as the Perrières. The nose is complex and broad, though not particularly deep. Intense fruit – very much so on the mid-palate. Good acidity and well covered tannins. The tannins are pretty silky – sort of halfway between the Petits Vougeots and the Perrières. Another very good wine.

2002 Prieur-Brunet Meursault Charmes

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Very pale colour with an understated nose of faint oak and melony notes. Really good acidity and a little fat too. The fruit is quite high toned and supported by a slightly grainy base of oak that intrudes slightly onto the quite long, aniseed finish. The oak will of course fade to leave a well made and interesting wine, but it’s not so exciting at this tender age.

2002 Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Clos St. Philibert

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

The subdued nose starts with a waxy melon note with a faint citrus edge and proceeds to offer a deeper honey note that gains strength with time. Dry, good/good-plus length. Not fat, but rather slender and elegant is a good description. Lovely acidity. Though not overtly fruity, this wine shows a very pleasing (to my palate) crisply mineral style.

2002 Bertagna Vougeot Les Petits Vougeots

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red with a purple highlight. Lovely high toned nose with fine red and black cherry fruit. Super depth with silky tannins that are amply covered by the fruit. There’s very good acidity too. Long with a hint of vanilla on the finish. A very nice wine.

2002 Fevre William Chablis Le Clos

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Pale lemon yellow. The nose starts subdued giving high toned floral aromas, faint green apple and mild peach. With time the peach component becomes stronger. The palate has the hallmarks of great Chablis – purity, just a little trace of fat and a superb length. I felt that maybe a shade more acidity would provide an even better wine, but not enough to stop me ordering half a case for future reference(!) A stealth wine that creeps up on you getting better and better in the glass.

2002 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Not quite so deep a colour as the 2003, more a medium-plus cherry red. High toned flowery nose with red cherry on a deep undertow of black-skinned fruits. Some fat and very smooth with good acidity. Shows well mannered tannins and mix of black and red fruits. Finishes with a little wood on the palate – but should be no problem at this age – and very good length. Will be a lovely wine.
