2000 Romanée-Conti Romanée Saint-Vivant

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

Cherry in shade and a deeper colour than the previous wine. The nose is more reticent, but certainly shows more complexity than the Echézeaux from a similar fruit profile i.e. red, rather than the black of the Grands Echézeaux. Shows coffee and faint vanilla in the mix too. Compared to the Grands Echézeaux, the palate starts explosively, the velvety tannin grabbing the inside of your mouth to attach the fruit. There’s nice acidity that pushes the persistent finish longer. Lovely.

2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

Bouchard are significantly the largest owners in this vineyard with 2 of the 7.3 hectares. The vineyard which is in Puligny lies just above Montrachet itself but is characterised by much stonier and chalkier soil. The wine had a completely different nose to the Corton-Charlemagne, more refined with an amazing depth of high toned fruits. The density in the mouth was very similar to the C-C but to a completely different effect. Whereas the C-C starts with a bang, the C-M is more sedate but then builds to explosion on the finish. A really fantastic wine.

Less deep colour than La Tâche – looks quite delicate in the glass. Like La Tâche, the nose starts in a very subdued way; but much more floral (how I’d expected the Romanée-Saint-Vivant might show) than the other wines. The next sniff shows much deeper tones, and again with each sniff the wine develops new aromas: kirsch, cassis, faint vanilla, then the floral element returns – almost lavender followed by coal-tar. In the mouth, perfect acidity and again, silk rather than velvet tannin. Once more I find the palate less involving than the nose, but a beautiful wine by any standard that leaves a smooth coating on your teeth to remind you of the experience!

2000 Drouhin Joseph Beaune Clos des Mouches

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

In this case the ‘mouches’ are bees, not flies! This, the best known of Drouhin’s vineyards was purchased about 1918, today it is run on a biodynamic basis. The colour is similar to the Côte de Beaune. Again, reserved on the nose, a little toasty perhaps – though Drouhin don’t char their barrels. Very good acidity and much finer tannins than the last wine. The black cherry fruit is intense, lasting well in the finish. A very good wine, again will benefit from some time in the cellar.

2000 Drouhin Joseph Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

This wine is a mixture of 5 Crus; Hauts-Doix, Borniques, Noirots, Plantes and Combottes. Deep cherry in colour. Again the nose is reserved, no toast this time, but higher toned with faint fruit preserve. Really interesting on the palate, lots going on here – a mixture of red and black fruits shaded towards red. Lovely length with very fine tannins. A very good wine that you could certainly enjoy today.

2000 Jadot Louis Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gains

Gold. Buttery nose which is sweet and wide. Lovely acidity. Very concentrated, intense even in the finish. A ‘bigger wine’ than most of the 2001’s.

2000 Groffier Robert - Père et Fils Bourgogne Rouge

By on January 31, 2003 #asides

Slightly animale nose with primary black fruit. For a Bourgogne this has excellent density and very good acidity. The tannins are quite grainy with blackberry and raspberry fruit. This is very nice wine and excellent Bourgogne.

2000 Forey Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée Les Gaudichots

By on December 31, 2002 #asides

Looks more mature than the previous wine, still a core of cherry colour, but more brick at at the rim. Nose is is very interesting with spices and an undercurrent of cherry and coffee. The palate has almost good acidity and furry tannin. Good depth to the red fruit which goes on and on in the finish, but is (for me) slightly spoiled by a ‘dirtyness’ right at the end. Could be just the oak which should subside with time. Still a very fine wine I think.

2000 Joblot Givry Pied de Chaume

By on November 30, 2002 #asides

Medium ruby colour, still cherry red at the rim. Nose has some low down traces of oak and forcefull black cherry. Very good acidity compliments intense cherry (again!) fruit. The tannins are well covered though fraying a little at the edges. This is a super-succulent wine. Very moreish, also very good.
