1988 Berthaut Fixin Les Arvelets

By on October 31, 2007 #asides

A deep, dusky and musky nose – in the short time we’re together the fruit slowly comes more to the fore. Very soft entry,

it’s wide and and interesting with plenty of dimension, power and is quite ripe. There’s a little more grain to the tannins

than the previous wines, but this is long and lovely – à point!

A wide and deep nose, mainly of ripe fruit, just a little oak and some rounding, higher notes. The palate is quite linear, intense on the tongue and very, very complex as it leaves the mid-palate for the finish. The finish is understated, but very long. Not sexy, but not severe – very, very good, but don’t let’s discuss the price vs quality ratio…

Medium-pale ruby red. Sweet older nose of complex red fruit and wood. There’s also a fabulous burst of fruit on the palate. Despite good acidity and tannins, nothing seems to be melding together all that well – nice parts but not a team performance.

1988 Remoissenet Père et Fils Montrachet

Medium golden colour. Very high toned and somewhat volatile, estery notes dwarfing a ripe, deeper and interesting core. Initially disappointing in context, but this wine improves leaps and bounds as the volatile edge leaves the scene. Wide, panoramic palate with an extra burst on the mid-palate. Long and very interesting. I don’t think the valatility will aid longevity, but the show’s pretty good today.

Medium ruby red. Quite a diffuse nose of high tones over a denser fruit base. There’s certainly a nice burst of fruit on the mid-palate and the almost resolved tannins show good texture. Very nice, but I was left wanting given the grand cru status

1988 Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes-Mares

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Medium-plus core of ruby-red that shows only a little fading. The nose is very-much a 1993-style expression of fruit with a more mineral, graphitic edge and becomes a little meaty with aeration. Lovely texture, still very fruit-driven and also quite earthy. The balance and remaining structure suggest that many years of enjoyment lie ahead for this wine.

1988 Arnoux Robert Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

An aged colour of medium-plus browning amber. Not too much spice on the nose, but plenty of sous bois and turned earth. Unlike some of the younger vintages which are very, very concentrated, the wine puts in a very elegant performance. The tannins are resolved, the acidity is good and there is the silky texture that only a good Burgundy can deliver. A treat!
