1997 Rion Daniel Nuits St.Georges Les Vignes Rondes

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

I’m ashamed to say, that this is a wine I bought solely based on a Winespectator review – 93 points or something, however, it’s not all that bad! The colour is medium ruby red fading slightly to amber. The nose is a blast of creamy, toasty oak that fades slightly though never quite enough to show the fruit. Ripe fruit, some fat, creamy length and little in the way of tannin. The finish is reasonably long. This is a nice wine that needs a little longer to let the oak fade a little more, but is an excellent drink now if you like the style – me I’ll let the oak fade a little more.

1997 Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru

Medium ruby with just a little amber. The nose is relatively young showing with slightly baked fruit – not much complexity, though given time you do find a pure red cherry note pushing through. The palate is rich and dense with primary fruit, plenty of velvetty tannin and almost good acidity. No fireworks on the finish but there’s a subtle length. Good, but at this stage quite primary and not showing good value – we’ll see!

1997 Lafarge Michel Volnay 1er Cru

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium cherry red, just starting to take on a more ruby colour. The nose is of bright red fruits – just a little primary and one-dimensional. The palate is fresh and clean with a quite lovely understated concentration coupled with discrete tannins. Just a little creamy edge to the finish. Showing in a young way and not a typical 1997 style. Very nice.

1997 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Varoilles

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium ruby red shading to amber. Again the nose is a little muted, same high tones but a more roasted aspect to the fruit. Fat with almost good acidity and still a little tannin. The rôti note is more obvious still on the palate. The finish is deep and admirably long but my preference would be for the previous wines.

1997 Faiveley Joseph Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus ruby red, still with a shade of cherry – not much fading. The nose shows sweet raspberry and red cherry pie – complex and enticing. The palate shows fresh acidity, like biting into fresh fruit – if only the tannins and finish were a match. Despite good length, they start a little bitter and astringent. Certainly improves (up to a point) with aeration and food and is quite drinkable – lovely fruit. Interesting – even nice – but not a ‘re-buy’.

1997 Gros Michel Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas

Medium, medium-plus cherry red with a little amber. The oak is barely detectable together with black and red fruit pies. Excellent fruit and depth with good acidity. Starting to drink now.

1997 Morey Marc Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot

Medium-plus ruby colour. High toned cherry nose with faint blueberry. The nose really evolved, going through a stage where I suspected cork taint (despite an anything but dull palate) but this quickly became first caramel and then coffee. The palate is absolutely not meek and mild, fresh with lovely acidity, furry tannin and still a little oak. Becomes a little sweeter with aeration. A very long too, still with an astringent cherry finish – but then the cork note returns and dominates. A young and very characterful wine – spoiled by taint in this case.

1997 Angerville Marquis d' Volnay Clos des Ducs

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Medium ruby red, but looks much older than Jadot’s Grèves. Nose starts quietly, then goes deep and sweet. After time a little wood spice develops together with higher ‘flowery’ tones. Well structured with very good acidity bold but controlled tannin. The fruit has good intensity and shows medium-plus length. Certainly worth saving longer as it should be very good, but this wine is not not as interesting as the 1998 I recently had, and doesn’t come close to the 1999.

1997 Angerville Marquis d' Volnay Champans

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Deep ruby, no browning. Characteristic high toned Volnay nose of raspberries and some cherry. Deeper notes lower down too. Fresh, indeed harsh palate when first opened – but 15 minutes aeration was enough to smooth the edges. Good acidity and smooth ‘I’m here if you look for me’ tannins. Lovely concentrated fruit coupled with medium-plus length. This is still young – but lovely anyway.
