le weekend, les wines…

2000 Nicolas Potel, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Les Peuillets
Ooh! This smells fine; deep, faintly musky, with warm leaves and an appealing sweetness. Fine texture on the tongue with a sweetness of mature red pinot fruit. I love Peuillets, having also collected the Camille Giroud version since the 04 vintage. This is too good for typing – I have to drink – sadly though, this is my last of these…

2013 Maison Harbour, Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice
Nicely packaged – hand numbered on the back-label and capped with a sturdy black wax top. The nose starts with a little reduction – perhaps no surprise given that it’s sealed with DIAM30. Give it air, and there’s a little white pepper over a hint of mineral and a tight but interesting dark fruit. Ample width with more than an implied weight, too. Very silky, with a bright, indeed pretty mid-palate fruit. Mouth-wateringly moreish. I drank this over two nights, and it was even better on the second night!

bouchard’s 1994 cuvée carnot – drinking at last!

Who would of thought – One of my 1994s has come around!

1994 Bouchard Père, Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot
Well, normally these have both smelled and tasted rather ‘hard’ but here is a rather welcoming, sweet and warm aroma – slightly stewing fruit, but attractive all the same. In the mouth there a nice line of sweetly, mouth-watering flavour and certainly an overall maturity to the experience with modest energy too. I can honestly say that I’m enjoying this. There, I said it!
Rebuy – Maybe!

3 little somethings from the last weekend…

By billn on October 22, 2015 #degustation

WP_20151018_20_26_26_ProI should really post my weekend wines – before I forget them! – eh? Particularly as the Jadot is second only to the ’71 Chambertin this year…

2007 L+A Lignier, Morey St.Denis 1er Cuvée Romain Lignier
Relatively deep colour for an 07. The nose is pure, deep Morey and I like the weight. In the mouth there’s also plenty of weigh, the dark fruit coming in waves. Balanced, expressive and drinking rather well. Lovely wine.

2010 Rapet, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Ile des Vergelesses
A wine with a complex, herby, sometimes green sometimes fruit nose – move from a Spiegelau Zalto Universal lookalike to a Riedel pinot Vinum and this shows more bass notes and more weight of fruit aroma. In the mouth there’s a textural roundness, balance and then a fine extra dimension of 1er cru flavour in the mid-palate and finish. Very good!
Rebuy – Yes

1993 Domaine Louis Jadot, Clos de Vougeot
Ouf! Now we are talking – a simply beautiful, mature, complex and really quite forward nose. In the mouth this has great texture until the tannin exerts a little grip in the mid-palate but that’s a fleeting impression as the flavour then literally explodes over the tongue and into the finish – wow indeed. This really needs all of another 10 years for full maturity, but what a wine. Magnificent…

a brace of weekend le grappins…

2012 Le Grappin, Beaune 1er Les Grèves Blanc
Quite a deep yellow. A round nose but one that’s also a little anonymous. In the mouth, also round, certainly quite tasty, yet, again a little anonymous versus my barrel tasting – lacking drive, energy and character. I suppose this gives me excuse to try another – here are DIAM seals, so it shouldn’t be a cork problem.
Rebuy – No

2012 Le Grappin, Beaune 1er Les Boucherottes
Deeply coloured and already some deposit of tartrate/tannin in the bottle. Unlike the Grèves, here is a full, energetic nose – primary of-course. Likewise in the mouth but here is a wine of depth, weight and some layers of flavour. A finely balanced wine, indeed a fine Beaune!
Rebuy – Yes

germain’s 1996 beaune les teurons…

1996 Germain, Beaune 1er Les Teurons
What a surprise! These half bottles have always been a bit too oaky and uninspiring – now, eventually, we have life – and what life it is! There remains more than a hint of oak texture, but now there is a frankly beautiful clarity of fruit – both aromatically and on the palate. Fine acidity and intensity, the tannin texture seems more of oak than grape but this was just a beautiful (3) glass(es).

Thanks Benoit!

week-day castagnier and fourrier ;-)

1996 Guy Castagnier, Clos de Vougeot
Hmm – starts a little disappointing – particularly after a stellar last bottle and a similarly brilliant 97 Clos de la Roche during harvest. The nose is sullen and hints at brett. The flavours are not terrible, but not special either. Day two this has way too much brett and is cloudy. Not really drinkable – yet – it was great in the sauce for my sausages!
Rebuy – No

1999 Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles-Vignes
The cork is soaked beyond right through – a problem with many pre-2002 Fourriers – but the wine seems to have survived; it starts a little stinky/reduced but shaking to reduce the amount of gas (yes, it’s still in there!) improves things very quickly. Now fresh aromas, developed, faintly of leaves though not much fruit. In the mouth, narrow but beautifully mouth-watering flavour that shows an ever-growing width and really pretty layers of flavour – very good texture too. Just one more of these waits in the cellar, but currently this wine is drinking beautifully.
