1999 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Lavières

Medium plus colour. Deep black fruit surrounded by a dry, spicy oak note – nice. The palate is concentrated, showing black fruit – almost a black olive note – very good acidity and decent length. The tannins have a little grain and a little bitterness too. This is certainly in the Grivot vernacular, extracted and needing a little time. With aeration the black fruit starts to take on a plum aspect, indeed if the the tannins were a bit thicker and more velvetty you could probably convince someone that this is a merlot! I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, and I’ll also give my other two bottles several years.

Medium / medium-plus ruby red colour. There’s super depth on the nose with very pure plum and cherry fruit. Excellent balance, with good acidity and well covered tannin – again nice purity to the fruit – long too. This is a good example and is very tasty even today!

1999 de Montille Volnay

Medium cherry red in colour. Lovely, high-toned red fruity nose, raspberry and strawberry. The palate is medium intensity but has beautifully pure high toned fruit and kind of sneaks up on you with the finish. Perfect acidity and tannin that’s only there if you search for it. Not a blockbuster. but balanced and pure – should age very gracefully – lovely.

Pale gold. Very nutty – in fact almost too nutty. There’s also a faint oxidative note. The palate shows some fat and good acidity too, but there’s a little of oxidative impression here too. If it’s just the style than I’m not a fan!

1999 Barthod Ghislaine Chambolle-Musigny

A good medium/medium-plus colour, virtually no fading. The nose has high toned raspberries and a decadent red cherry. Lovely concentration to the fruit, very fresh acidity and well mannered tannins. Good length – did I buy a case of this? – I think I did – a good decision!

1999 Faiveley Joseph Mercurey La Framboisière

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Medium ruby red with cherry at the rim. A subdued cooked cherry nose with just a trace of caramel. Less sweet than the Givry but good depth of fruit and good acidity too. The smooth tannin is a good buffer. Good.

1999 Faiveley Joseph Givry Champ-Lalot

Medium ruby red. Clean, sweet red berried nose – raspberry, redcurrant and strawberry. Quite full with medium-soft tannins and good acidity. This has a nice style and would be worth leaving a couple of years.

1999 Moillard-Grivot Meursault

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Pale colour. This shows a heavy, almost reduced nose, perhaps a little vegetal too – over 45 minutes it didn’t improve. The palate, however, is quite fat and very Meursault. Good length too. Shame about the nose.

1999 Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne-Romanée

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose is a subdued strawberry and raspberry number – very smooth. Lovely mouthfeel, lots of high-toned fruits, good acidity and medium, velvetty tannins. Persistent finish too. This is a very good villages wine.
