2001

2001 Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Similar in colour to the 2001 villages Chambolle. The fruit shows a much deeper aspect on the nose and still a trace of oak. The palate also offers a step-up in density vs the villages and an extra creamy edge to the beautifully presented fruit. To match, there’s a little extra structure with more forward tannins. Not so lacy but certainly more serious. Very good wine, one day.

2001 Prieur-Brunet Meursault Charmes

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Pale gold colour. The nose is round and a little more exotic than the 2002. The palate shows just a little more balance and texture but without quite the same power and fat of the 2002. I prefer this by a short-nose. There’s that slightly nutty Meursault thing starting to happen vs the more primary fruit of the ’02. Good length. I prefer the texture and balance of this wine, but prefer the fruit of the ’02 – such is life – still a good wine.

2001 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Guettes

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Similar colour. The fruit is a little diffuse, but the panorama is much wider – even a little coffee. The concentration of the palate belies the colour, though it’s certainly a more elegant expression than the 2002 – today.

2001 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Gravains

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Typically 25% new oak for the elevage. The soil is a mix of different sediments, including a little gravel. This wine has a younger colour than the previous two. The deep nose shows a little earth and much more primary fruit than the last two 2001’s. This is a wine of purity rather than force, very elegant too. A lovely wine.

2001 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Dominode

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

The colour is a little darker. The nose commences with primary cherry-fruit and only very slowly gives up additional complexity. [Hugues often fins the Dominode to be a ‘simple’ wine in it’s youth] Seems fresher than the Gravains, primary and quite tight in the mouth, most of the complexity is found on the finish. This is quite elegant, and it’s interesting to contrast vs the extra bulk of the 2002.

2001 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Just slightly paler than the 2002. Surprisingly the nose goes a little deeper and there’s a dark trace of oak. The wine’s a little cold, but swirling will eventually coax out some red fruit. Soft as silk, fills the mouth admirably. Fresh, lovely acidity. Needs more time than the 2002 and for me has an extra purity. Lovely, I suppose I’ll have to buy some of this too…

2001 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Always a relative bargain this wine – assuming that it’s a good one of course: Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is faintly powdery and a little closed when cold from the cellar. The palate shows a linear delivery of tight fruit with good intensity but little fat. Very good acidity and a slight creamy impression to the medium finish. The tannin is still a little astringent but becomes softer and friendlier with aeration. I won’t return for at least 3 years, serious wine for the price.

2001 En Truffière (Vincent Girardin) Puligny-Montrachet Caillerets

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

Golden colour. The nose starts with a few barrel notes that make the nose slightly buttery, higher tones of lemon too. The palate has good acidity and a nicely intense fruit that follows well into the slightly sweet finish. There is a little harshness on the palate but this will fade. A nice wine.

2001 Fevre William Chablis Fourchaume

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus yellow. The nose is a citrussy blend of creamy peach and apricot – very nice. The palate has very nice intensity and a lovely balance to the acidity. A wine I can happily drink on its own. Almost good length too. I found a very good price for this (and the Fevre 2001 Bougros too), a price that will allow me to make this one of my tipples of choice in the garden over the summer
