1998 Gambal Alex Echézeaux

A developed, medium ruby red. The nose has a lovely dried red fruit and raisin aspect – just a little coffee and smokey ash too. The palate unfortunately is a bit of a let-down: The fruit is nice enough – as is the texture – but from the mid-palate onwards this is a little bitter, weedy (for a Grand Cru) and woody. In fact the wood note hovers perilously close to taint, but we had two bottles with consistent notes. A shame, as I know the 1999 is a very nice wine. A friend had Alex’s ’98 V-R Suchots and it showed far better than this. Not worth the entrance price.

2001 Romanée-Conti Echézeaux

Medium, medium-plus cherry red in colour. The nose is of crushed cherry and raspberries that overlay a faintly spicy, subtle coffee-bean base. The tannin seems to show a little more grip than the last tasting, but frankly (despite chewing on bread for the last ten minutes) I keep getting ‘Montrachet-flashbacks’ as I taste. The spicy palate is silken with excellent acidity and a tinge of oak on the finish that’s reminiscent of the Montrachet – unless that’s still the Montrachet! Clearly a pure and distinguished wine, but doesn’t show that joie de vivre that was so evident in January.

2001 Romanée-Conti Echézeaux

Medium, medium-plus cherry red. Bright and intense nose of red and black cherry – shaded to red – with raspberry and subtle spice. The palate is sweet with very smooth tannin, nice concentration and just a little vanilla on the finish – a finish of 20-30 seconds. Smooth, understated and very drinkable – I’m surprised how easily this drinks. With time the impressive nose develops a little more spice. To put this wine firmly into context, after the La Tâche and Romanée-Conti, the nose is slightly less concentrated and certainly more diffuse. Still, there’s super length if less depth on the palate – in a word the wine is just ‘simpler’ than the top two, but nonetheless a very fine Échézeaux.

1999 Gambal Alex Echézeaux

Bought in as wine. Dark young cherry colour. The deep nose has blueberry and black cherry. Fat with big velvetty tannins and a black fruit profile. Lovely concentration, though slightly diffuse – it’s hard to easily pick the individual elements. Overall this has very good style. The winery is keeping back a quantity of this wine – so if you spot some on the shelf in 3 or 4 years time – snap it up!

1997 Potel Nicolas Echézeaux

Very deep ruby colour right to the rim. The nose is a little earthy, supporting black cherries and a savoury, meaty note. The palate is sweet, showing refreshing acidity and medium, drying tannins. The mainly black fruit has lovely concentration – blackberry being dominant and slightly roasted in character – and sustains a very long finish. Perhaps the oak is still making the palate slightly harsh, but frankly this has excellent potential and needs all of 4 or 5 years before it really starts to drink well.

2000 Romanée-Conti Echézeaux

Medium-plus cherry colour, shading to ruby at the rim. An understated nose of pure cherries and faint vanilla. Nice volume in the mouth, showing good sap. There’s good acidity and very well covered tannin. There is a lovely length to this wine, also tinged with vanilla. A wine that is very ‘2000’ in its bright and pretty fruit profile and one you could certainly enjoy at a relatively young age, say in another 4 or 5 years. But I’m sure the more patient amongst you will be amply rewarded.

1991 Grivot Jean Echézeaux

Medium ruby colour bricking towards the edge. Unusual nose – almondy. After the above this is so much thicker, smoother and red fruitier with a hint of spice. Acidity is good and the tannins completely softened. Very yummy. Actually if I’d read before Clive Coates review in his ten years on, I wouldn’t have bought this one, but while the nose sounds similar, they rest is not recognisable. From me 18, from Clive only 14
