2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet

By on March 31, 2008 #asides

From 2.5 hectares of vines – BP&F own one third of the appellation, all purchase in the 1800’s. The nose focuses on fruit, higher and mineral tones. Fantastic, mouth-filling, clean, pure and mineral. Long, very long, eventually with a little cream – superb. I delayed as long as possible tasting the Charlemagne as the taste of this lingered for minutes…

All from Pernand fruit. The nose is a wide vista edged with faint caramel. The palate is mineral and well textured yet still manages to saturate the palate with concentrated fruit. The length appears merely good, but the wine overall is far better than that.

2006 Simmonet-Febvre Chablis Le Clos

Understated fruit that is just a little diffuse. Mineral and with good acidity – a faint spritz too – An excellent burst of interest on the mid-palate and a good finish. The most ‘Chablis’ wine so far for me.

Aromatically a little deeper, with fewer high-tones. This is more mineral and with more acidity defining the spine of the wine. This is also superbly long and perhaps with even better focus. It’s driven by minerality rather than the waves of creamy fruit of the Chevalier. Today I would drink the Chevalier, but in 10 years? I’ll duck the question, but I’d love to make the comparison!

Another wine with very reticent aromatics – I can’t say anything here. In the mouth it’s concentrated and focused and has a nice intensity to it. Very long and just slightly savoury in the finish. Good Charlemagne!

2006 Thomas-Moillard Corton-Charlemagne

Intense, faintly creamy aromatics. Very soft and silky with a creamy concentration. Wide and long – excellent – from the style and poise I’d guess Bouchard Père.

2006 Brocard Jean-Marc Chablis Le Clos

The nose here is only about ripe fruit – almost too much. Fuller in the mouth with good acidity. Actually it’s just a little plump and it’s not quite as long as the last wine. Good but not great.

2006 de Villamont Henri Corton-Charlemagne

A reticent nose – tight fruits in the mix. Wide, silky, high-toned fruit in the mouth. There’s a hint of spritz and a long savoury finish but this doesn’t have the extra zing of the previous wines.
