2001 Chevillon Robert Nuits St.Georges Vieilles Vignes

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose starts with an overcoat of plummy fruit, slowly removed to reveal a more earthy black cherry centre. The palate is fat and soft with good acidity and slightly grainy tannin. The fruit is again shaded to black and shows very good length though there is a little bitterness to the lingering fruit. This is certainly what I would describe as modern in style – eminently drinkable even if I’d never guess it was from Nuits!

2001 Confuron-Cotetidot Gevrey-Chambertin

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose has high toned red fruit and the merest trace of Gevrey earth. A round and interesting palate – the fruit is nice and pure, the tannins are velvetty and very well behaved. Tasty wine – an archetypal 2001.

2001 Colombier Chablis

By on June 30, 2004 #asides

Pale gold. The nose has good depth set against higher fruit notes. The palate showing medium density and good lemony acidity. Steely and nicely balanced – this seems very good value at ~12 Euro.

2001 Carillon Louis Côte de Beaune Villages

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium ruby with a bright cherry red rim. The nose is a tasty high toned red cherry and raspberry affair. The palate shows surprisingly intense red fruit, good fat and well mannered slightly drying tannins. The fat gives the impression that (maybe) the acidity is a little low, but this was perfect with Christmas dinner. A real find!

2001 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

A blend from three different vineyards. Just a little darker in colour. A deeper nose, more sumptuous and floral, at first I thought ripe pear fruit, but before emptying the glass I decidied it was more pineapple. More concentration and depth on the mid-palate than the Clos du Château. There’s a super little burst/flourish of fruit on the finish. This is a lovely villages.

2001 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Medium lemon yellow. Quite an understated nose with more obvious citrus – quite classy. A fat and really very Puligny palate. Much more forward than the nose suggests. There’s super acidity and fine length. This is a very fine villages – and would be a pretty good 1er Cru!

2001 Gambal Alex Chambolle-Musigny

By on May 31, 2003 #asides

Medium, mediu-plus cherry red. Pronounced black cherry notes on the nose that slowly become ‘redder’ with time. Pure 2001-style fruit with good concentration. The finish is a good one too. I like this wine.

2001 Drouhin Joseph Chablis Reserve de Vaudon

By on February 28, 2003 #asides

An assemblage of parcels from the right bank of the Serein River, between the Montée de Tonnerre and Mont de Milieu. Bright, pale gold colour. A pure sweet nose with a trace of melon and lemon. A lovely ‘zing’ of acidity, mineral and very long. This would make a perfect aperitif, or perhaps as Véronique suggests with oysters! Very good.
