2000

A good medium cherry red colour. The nose is a little subdued but is mainly red cherry. Sweet with good acidity and reasonably concentrated fruit. Unfortunately the tannins dominate – which is unusual in 2000. Still almost good this one.

Medium cherry red. The nose is relatively subdued giving up only a red cherry note – little else. The palate is more forward with fresh acidity. There are red fruits and a more than pleasant finish that’s just tinged with cream. A lightish wine but one that worked perfectly for lunch…

Medium cherry red. Cherry and pretty red fruits. The palate shows good acidity, medium tannins and a little coffee on the finish. Very 2000 and very nice. Not a big wine, but a rich creamy finish to remember it by.

Medium cherry red. The nose is a forward mix of cherries, cassis, oak and faint vanilla. Very smooth, slightly oaky and concentrated palate. The acidity is adequate and the medium density tannins are very fine. A very long finish. Priced higher than many 1er Cru’s – but probably worth the outlay. Excellent villages. I’d suggest leaving 3 or 4 years to tone down the oak influence which I find a little ‘blurring’, but no rush to drink for several years there-after.

2000 Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet

Pale gold. Quite an understated nose of white flowers, peach and grapefruit. A more intense fruit experience than Leflaive’s bourgogne, still a little oak and almost good acidity. The finish is longer than the Bourgogne too. For best effect, I’d suggest leaving this for 2 or 3 years while you drink the Bourgogne!

Medium ruby red. The nose is spicy with toasty oak – does a good job of masking the fruit. The palate is oaky and sweet with very smooth tannins and good acidity. I like the concentration. Personally I’d wait for the oak to subside, but this drinks very well already – excellent value too.

2000 Gambal Alex St.Aubin (Sur Gamay)

Pale yellow. A subdued sherbet and toffee nose. Good fat and a lovely depth to the fruit. Good acidity too which pushes the finish along. There’s nice style here.

2000 Chézeaux Gevrey-Chambertin

A complete contrast to the last wine. Only medium ruby colour, just the slightest trace of cherry at the rim – looks like a 1997. The nose is of raspberry and strawberry confiture and a little earth – not at all confected despite the description and with time develops a raisin note. Medium concentration, though good volume in the mouth and good acidity with relatively light and very smooth tannin. The finish builds well, first slightly cooked fruit then a little earth. Elegant and moreish. Exceptional value direct from the domaine – 11 Euro plus taxes.

Quite deep, extracted looking ruby – still cherry red at the rim. The nose starts very dumb, given time it starts to betray a little oak but also quite deep cherry – shaded to black. The palate is quite smooth with good acidity and strong fruit. The finish is woody from the oak. Nice fruit, but currently trapped in a wooden box – I’d be interested to try this again in 4/5 years – hopefully it will be starting to coalesce.
