2003 Vougeraie Vougeot Clos Blanc de Vougeot

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

Rich and ripe with apparently good acidity – but just a little harshness – this was quite a late bottling despite a quick malo. For my palate, disappointing, even for an 03.

2003 Chézeaux Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

The nose is not so deep, but shows width and interesting, if linear fruit. The plalate is wide and not obviously 2003 in complexion. Plenty of fine tannin and reasonable acidity. This is rather nice.

2003 Chézeaux Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

A little deaper in colour than the village wine. The nose is a little more reticent and mineral, slowly widening and deepening with darker and darker fruit. More tannin than the villages wine, but it’s also much finer grained and has almost no astringency. The fruit is concentrated and provides good balance and good length too. A significant step-up from the villages and great value.

2003 Rion Michele & Patrice Nuits St.Georges Clos Des Argillières

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

Deep coloured. The explosive nose is full of deep sweet oak, certainly quite OTT at this young age. The palate is deep & sweet, mixing easily with completely covered fine tannins, lots of sweet oak on the sweet fruit is hard to take. Medium-plus, very sweet length. I have another bottle to prove me wrong in the future, but today there is nothing here that I look for in Burgundy – my wife loved it!

2003 l'Arlot Nuits St.Georges Clos des Fôrets St.Georges

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium-plus cherry-red. A little tighter, more linear and darker shaded than the l’Arlot. Lots of action on the palate, bulkier with more tannin, brighter fruit in the background. Again the weight of dry extract on the finish. A good wine, but I still prefer the l’Arlot in this vintage

2003 l'Arlot Nuits St.Georges Clos de l'Arlot

By on October 31, 2005 #asides

Medium colour. Initially not an obvious 03 nose, it retains the hallmarks of the rest of its family, high-toned fresh fruit, and a hint of coffee mixed with the smoky notes. Also the palate is quite fresh and concentrated, but without the ponderous effects often seen in 03. Architypal 03 finish that is about concentrated dry-extract rather than elegance. Very good for the vintage.

2003 Arnoux Robert Nuits St.Georges Les Procès

By on June 30, 2005 #asides

A brooding, tight nose matches the deeper colour. The palate is less fat and shows another (higher) level of tannin. The fruit is up to the challenge, but this is a much fresher wine. Also medium length.

2003 Pavillon Aloxe-Corton Clos des Maréchaudes

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

A deeply coloured wine. The nose is rather closed, but the palate has a lovely covering of ripe, black-shaded fruit that has an extra burst on the finish.

2003 Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

One-third from the climat of Les Duresses (lots of brown clay) and two-thirds from Les Bréterins at the beginning of the village and touching Le Val. Stony soil here with more marl and typically giving a little extra finesse. Good depth to the nose. The palate’s profile is quite fresh with a good grab to the tannins. Perhaps the finish is a little short(?)
