2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos du Roi

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is high-toned and slightly estery, though there’s still reasonable red fruit in the background. Nice density and useful acidity too but not quite the buffering sweet fruit of 18 months ago. Still, the texture is almost good and there’s a little cream on the surprisingly long finish. This was a fantastic little wine on release but the joie de vivre is now gone so I suggest letting them lay down for another few years.

I must have loved this one when I first tasted it as there were another 6 in the cellar which I found whilst tidying up. The colour is starting to show a little age. The nose has a little high toned fruit but mostly it’s a dense, slightly sweet affair. The palate shows the vintage without the ‘puppy fat’ the fruit has reasonable density, but there seems to be some acidity missing making the wine much less refreshing and succulent than I remember it on release – perhaps I should have drunk these at the time(?) Still they’ll be handy when I need an extra bottle for something/one, after-all they were quite reasonably priced – I think! It’s a perfectly okay wine, but not in the class of Pavelot’s 00 Dominode.

Looks both concentrated and young – there’s still a purple edge to the deep cherry colour. The nose is very fresh and pure cherry – red & black. The palate is exactly what many 2000’s are not, a little austere but has concentrated, linear, primary fruit. Very good acidity and tannins that have a little grain about them. Still drinkable but this wine will amply repay 5 or 6 years in the cellar. Super.

Medium cherry red. The nose is a quite pleasing red fruit number without ever being very interesting. The fruit on the palate is very nice, with reasonable depth too. What’s surprising is that (for a 2000) the structure slightly outweighs the fruit. In this case this in not obvious with food and the wine works very well.

2000 Boillot Jean-Marc Pommard Jarollières

Medium colour with little fading. The nose starts not auspiciously with sweet, alcoholic red fruit and oak but no cohesion, perhaps it’s the oak that’s the main fault, because as it fades the overall effect improves considerably. The palate is cool but also not so well joined-up. There’s a little tannin that sticks out as slightly bitter and mouthwatering acidity that also could also be better balanced. The fruit doesn’t do enough to hold this wine together. This was a nice, succulent wine last year but doesn’t come close to that definition this. I’m hoping it’s only a phase as I’ve 4 more in the cellar.

Golden colour. Nose is a little solid and unyielding, shows some depth though. Palate betrays the truth – good density, acidity seems in balance, but badly tainted…

The colour’s just a little deeper than 2001. A gorgeous high toned nose that’s very open and wide, tons of red berried fruit. Deep fruit that etches onto your palate. The tannins have a little grab, but are perfectly velvetty. Nice and deep with a lovely flourish on the finish. Another wine that I’ll buy!

2000 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts

Medium ruby red. The nose is so characteristic of Vosne that you could easily spot it without help from the label. A spicy base with appealing fruit that slowly closes up in the glass – takes about 30 minutes – the fruit remains at a lower register together with some coffee and less appealing cigarette ash. The palate is medium concentrated with a smooth palate, lingering acidity and slightly grainy tannin. The finish is long with penetrating red fruit, currently shows some slightly bitter oak tannin though. This just needs a couple of years to round out – should be a very nice wine – has the balance to go much longer too.

2000 Chevillon Robert Nuits St.Georges Chaignots

Dark ruby colour with very little fading. Deep, pronounced nose of primary black cherry. The palate is rich, soft and polished with impressive depth, velvetty tannins and pretty good acidity. At first I thought this was a little short, but it’s not, it’s more a slight hole in the mid-palate. A little too polished and not quite ‘fresh’ enough for further purchases chez Nanson, but could very well be described as ‘hedonistic’ in some circles – perhaps I’m more of a masochist 🙂
