1999 Faiveley Joseph Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

From the Rognet area of Corton. This is medium-full in colour, with a gorgeous mixture of pure blackberries and cherries on the nose. Really full, mouth-filling, velvetty tannins and excellent acidity. It’s very rich and long with the black fruit clinging to the inside of your mouth with the tannin. Excellent, but really needs many years in the cellar.

Bought in as wine. Dark young cherry colour. The deep nose has blueberry and black cherry. Fat with big velvetty tannins and a black fruit profile. Lovely concentration, though slightly diffuse – it’s hard to easily pick the individual elements. Overall this has very good style. The winery is keeping back a quantity of this wine – so if you spot some on the shelf in 3 or 4 years time – snap it up!

1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Le Corton

The vineyard holding of BP&F is extensive in Le Corton. Corton-Charlemagne is made from the top of this vineyard which despite it’s height is more protected from the elements due to the trees on the top of the hill. From the bottom part of this vineyard comes their red Corton, often a favourite of mine and it seems no change here! The colour is again not too saturated, but the nose is obviously much deeper and sweeter than the previous Volnay. The palate is full and tannic with excellent acidity and lovely intense black fruit. An excellent finish too. First class Corton.

Not a domaine owned vineyard, but the same supplier of grapes used for many years. Medium colour again. The nose is deep with some barrel toast evident, but not giving much more away. The palate is very round and tannic, but the tannins are finely grained. Lovely depth of concentrated fruit. Actually a very forward and drinkable wine here. Very lovely.

Deeply coloured, more purple than red. High notes to low notes take in raspberry then redcurrants finishing with creamy Victoria plums, possibly a suggestion of coffee too. The first thing that strikes you about the palate is how thick it feels in the mouth. The abundant fruit does well at hiding the medium tannins and the medium but lingering acidity. Absolutely first class, and currently drinking better than the 96, 97 & 98!

1999 Girardin Vincent Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze

Deeply coloured cherry, still with purple at the rim. Nose is muted, but traces of coffee and soil. The palate is fat and broad with excellent concentration of very ripe fruit. Good acidity and coats the inside of your mouth. Very fine.
