Medium ruby-red colour. The nose starts with prominent stalky smoke, slowly becoming more subtle. With time the nose tightens but still shows a faintly cream-tinged red-fruit jam. Nice texture though the acidity is obviously low. The fruit is ripe and sweet, though only a medium length finish. well-made with a lovely nose that currently overshadows the palate.
2000
2000 Clerc Henri Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières
Deep yellow. The nose is a little tight at first, but with real depth, hinting at peach and botrytis over a honeyed base. Viscous, dense palate that shows a real burst of intensity in the mid-palate. The acidity, likewise, comes with a bit of a burst. This is a dense, and currently slightly heavy wine that’s showing in a very young way. Should be very good, but needs 4-8 years before revisiting.
2000 Hospices de Beaune Meursault Genevrières Philippe le Bon
2000 Hospices de Beaune Beaune Gigione de Salins
Reserve of the Hospices. Medium, young colour. The nose jumps out of the glass with very bright and red-fruity notes, then after a time closes a little. The palate shows sweet, ripe fruit. There’s a nice character to this wine, a little ‘tender’, not high acidity for sure, but still mouthwatering. The tannins are in the background with just a little grain. Medium-plus length – a tasty and well mannered wine, particularly for 2000 Côte de Beaune.
2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Chablis Montmains
Pale yellow, indeed still a hind of green. The nose is a little diffuse and sweet. The palate is very fresh – carried along on a wave of tasty acidity, good mouth-watering length. Quite simple but with currently unexpressive concentration. Almost good in itself and very good when taking account of the price.
2000 Ecard Maurice Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Narbantons
Medium, medium-plus ruby. The nose is heaviliy influenced by spicy oak – initially the palate is similarly affected. The palate is just a little sweeter and denser than the other 2000’s drunk in this report with an interesting creamy burst in the mid-palate. Really needs a couple of hours in a decanter to show it’s style. This 2000 is a nice wine but a couple of levels below Pavelot’s Dominode from the same vintage.
2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus
Unfortunately the first bottle was corked, hence, the replacement was a little colder. The nose starts tight and high-toned over a begrudging deeper base. Characteristically soft and silky palate, good concentration for a 2000 Beaune – 15% was declassified to achieve this – but still not the same mid-palate punch. If this wine has an extra dimension, it is on the finish. Again the tannins are excellent.
2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos du Roi
Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is high-toned and slightly estery, though there’s still reasonable red fruit in the background. Nice density and useful acidity too but not quite the buffering sweet fruit of 18 months ago. Still, the texture is almost good and there’s a little cream on the surprisingly long finish. This was a fantastic little wine on release but the joie de vivre is now gone so I suggest letting them lay down for another few years.
2000 Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru
Just a little darker than the 2000 villages Chambolle. The nose is deeper, but significantly tighter. In the mouth, instantly lacier and spicier with an immense step-up in complexity – high-toned fruits invade the back of the palate. Late tannin grab with a really impressive length – I’d buy this in a shot.
