1997 Jadot Louis Beaune Les Grèves

Wasn’t able to replace the Clos des Ursules in time – so here’s the stand-in. Not normally quite as good as the ‘Clos’, but let’s see. Deep ruby colour – looks pretty young. The nose starts quite closed, but there’s plenty of high toned cherry fruit in the mouth – excellent acidity too. The tannins are very smooth and drying. The finish is medium-plus length. With time a lightly cooked nose of strawberry, plum and cherry develops and the fruit profile seems to become more red – redcurrant and raspberry. Perfectly balanced to leave as long as you wish. Very good.

Lovely ‘intermediate’ colour – a deep cherry red centre turning first ruby then brown as you reach the edge of the glass. The nose starts with a surprisingly earthy note, backed by oak – though not the high toast found on many ’97’s from Jadot. The palate shows intense fruit against an oaky base, but is a little rough – you could pick this as Corton – then the reason – CORK! That’s two in a row – what a shame, this also seems excellent.

Gold. Buttery nose which is sweet and wide. Lovely acidity. Very concentrated, intense even in the finish. A ‘bigger wine’ than most of the 2001’s.

Paler gold. Very reserved nose. Oak is a different style here, comes through on the explosive finish with a hint of vanilla. Good wine.

1996 Jadot Louis Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses

Deeper colour than most of the 2001’s. The reserved nose still shows deep black cherry. A black fruit flavour profile – blackcurrants. The tannins and acidity are very similar to the 2001’s. Still very young.

1998 Jadot Louis Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

Again very deep colour. More oak on the nose than any of the previous wines. Still, there is smooth cherry pie behind this oak. Lots of volume in the mouth, and lots of tannin to – but quite silky. Nice acidity and very long.

Still cherry colour, tending to ruby at the rim. Nose is ‘full-on’ red and black cherry with top notes of raspberry. The palate is very dry, good concentrated cherry fruit and excellent acidity for the vintage. Tannin is still there if you look. Still young, but ‘forgiving’ – wait another 5 years if you can for an excellent Beaune.

1999 Jadot Louis Pommard Epenots

By on December 31, 2002 #asides

Good deep cherry colour with hints of purple. Nose starts very closed, though a hint flowery. Develops to give nicely defined red berry fruit with a darker undertow of prune. The palate is fat with very well covered acidity and tannin. Though only medium length, this wine is really opulent. It doesn’t want to come out to play just now, but given time it should be fabulous. Wait at least 3 years to re-taste.
