Potel Nicolas

2004 Potel Nicolas Chambertin

Much more multidimensional on the nose, super complexity. Similar to the Clos de Bèze, quite understated though perhaps the length is not quite so sneaky. The nose from this and the palate of the Clos de Bèze would be the perfect synthesis today…

Wonderful nose of both depth and interest, not showing so deep. Overflowing with flavour – really mouth-watering. It’s surprising to have such a distinct impression after so many wines. The structure is a little more forward but as is the norm here it is very well put together. Tons of potential – super wine.

A much more delicate nose, subtly complex and still very, very interesting. Even another step up on the Echézeaux – wonderful mouth-watering complexity. An absolute stunner.

A tight and mineral nose with plenty of higher floral aspects. In the mouth this earthy and direct, concentrated and muscular. The fruit is certainly a good foil for the structure but this wine will require several years in the cellar. Very impressive but for my own taste less compelling than the Clos St.Denis, Echézeaux or Grands-Echézeaux – or come to think of it the Fuées or Petits Monts.

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. The nose is high-toned and, initially, a little ‘clipped’, it’s very wide but takes quite some time to take on a rounder form. The palate is not about overt density or creamy, spicy oak, rather transparency and a fine burst of intensity that crescendos into the very long finish. Vs my memory of the cask sample, I’m a little disappointed (maybe it was a different cask) as that was one of the finest wines I’ve ever tasted from barrel. In isolation this is a very fine Chambertin with great complexity and a wonderful finish. Excellent rather than great!

Medium-plus cherry-red. Some depth to the fruit on the nose and a low-key meaty note – surprising for such a juvenile. Intense cherry cordial on the palate with balanced acidity and tannins that show just a little rasp at the end.. A one-dimensional but long finish. Very easy to drink and given the balance and intensity you could lose this in the cellar for 10 years – no problem.

A medium-plus ruby-red, right up to the rim. The nose shows plenty of red cherry covering a deeper base of solid fruit and just a trace of secondary scents. Super intensity as you draw air through the wine, the fruit just shaded towards red. The tannins are in the background and there’s a lovely texture to the wine. Very long, but the finish is initially spoiled by an awkward showing to the acidity – but I think this must have been the cheese I was tasting (Sbrinz) as one espresso later, everything was fine. A very good and relatively young wine which improve over several years.

Very deep ruby colour right to the rim. The nose is a little earthy, supporting black cherries and a savoury, meaty note. The palate is sweet, showing refreshing acidity and medium, drying tannins. The mainly black fruit has lovely concentration – blackberry being dominant and slightly roasted in character – and sustains a very long finish. Perhaps the oak is still making the palate slightly harsh, but frankly this has excellent potential and needs all of 4 or 5 years before it really starts to drink well.
