2003 Chézeaux Gevrey-Chambertin

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

An open nose, high tones, a little red berry and even a hint of blue, just a hint of 2003 but not too much so. There’s plenty of concentration and the tannins have some grab and astringency – plenty of ripe red fruit on the finish though. A successful wine, particularly in the context of the vintage. Not the stunning elegance of the 2002, but of-course in this vintage…

Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose starts with lots of spicy oak, slowly fading to leave a few diffuse, high-toned notes over a fainter sweet base, eventually a faint coffe note too. The palate is medium concentrated with grainy but ripe tannins. Black, almost scorched fruit and a little mouth watering. Lots of sweetness, medium length. Like their 03 NSG premier, still not a 03 style that I enjoy.

Deep colour with a purple rim. The nose settles to bright red cherry with an edge of red berry fruit over a deeper, bubbling base. The fruit on the palate easily cuts through a swathe of tannin. There’s good concentration and it’s very enjoyable. It still comes over as cool and burgundian rather than hot and bothered. Frankly I expect it’s a wine for the short to medium term as the tannin could dominate if the fruit recedes. It’s been a bit of a crowd pleaser for guests at home this summer – particularly those shiraz lovers…

2003 Dauvissat Vincent Chablis

A young looking medium-pale yellow. The nose initially borders on the exotic with a little added caramel. Given time the nose becomes purer, still sweet, with nice high tones and shades of green-skinned apples. I’d describe the palate as rather mute and one dimensional following the Denis Mortet Bourgogne Blanc, but given the sweetness of the Mortet perhaps that was no surprise. Time shows a well concentrated finish and good-enough acidity though I would have preferred more. Almost good, but not on my re-purchase list.

2003 Harmand-Geoffroy Gevrey-Chambertin

Deep cherry-red colour. The nose is high-toned and just a little linear, the faint cherry fruit is edged with peppery notes. Drunk directly following Bernard Dugat-Py’s 2003 Bourgogne, there is good texture, but not so good as the Bourgogne, there is depth but not the concentration or perhaps the ripeness of the bourgogne, however, there is an extra burst of black fruit interest in this wine as it enters the finish. The finish does not quite a match the bourgogne for length. So 3-1 to the bourgogne? Not exactly, at ~15 Euros in the Leclerc supermarket this was less than half the price of the Dugat-Py Bourgogne – a sound, clean & tasty wine of some value.

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose is a mix rubber and sulfur. The sweet palate shows grainy tannin but becomes quite interesting from the mid-palate onwards – unfortunately I didn’t like the nose or the entry…

No VV label on the 2002 – what a difference a year makes. Deep crimson (blue-shade red actually). The nose at room temperature is quite diffuse but faint spice and deep, sweet black fruit lay in wait. Cool the wine to 15°C and it’s altogether tighter and in some ways (if you wait long enough) reminds me of 1993. Dense, indeed intense, mouth-watering acidity (Burghound notes no acidification in 03) and tannins that are very well covered by the extract. Very 2003 but it’s big fun too. As well-made as any in 2003 and very good value (~17€), I’ll have to try and visit this year.

Bottled only six weeks before. Sweet black nose that very slowly releases a red berry note too. Lovely mouth wrapping tannins and a creamy texture. Medium-plus length. This is a nicely controlled wine until it reaches room temperature – than it gets a bit loutish. Just keep him cool!

2003 Guyon Les Fils d'Antonin Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium-plus cherry-red. Smells and tastes like a barrel sample. Starts high-toned, but slowly becomes purer and redder in aspect. Reasonable freshness, quite sweet and though the tannins are reasonably textured I find (with a little chewing) they are a little green and bitter. The wine’s perfectly fine with food and quite tasty, though I wouldn’t leave it in the cellar for too many years though.
