Bouchard Père et Fils

2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Mercurey

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red colour. The nose is high toned and very, very pinot with a faint oaky undertone. The palate is fresh with a faint astringency coupled to some grain from the tannins. Not so dense, but flavour-packed, though perhaps the acidity is just a little to the fore. A nice red-fruited complexion with a reasonable finish. Almost good, though factor in the price of 22 Swiss francs and it also stays only at ‘almost good’ value stakes – there are many bargains to be found in 2005, this doesn’t qualify.

I remember the young 2003 making a strong impression for it’s fun, concentrated fruit-essence style. This wine (bottled in January) is almost as much fun, but considerable more sophisticated. From Bouchard’s own 2.9 hectares of vines. The nose is wider and fresher than the Bourgogne, with darker-skinned fruits and a little oak spice. Fuller in the mouth, considerably more serious structure – some grain to the tannin which clings to your teeth – yet this retains a fun face. Supple and ripe. Nice wine.

From purchased grapes. The high-toned nose is a little animale – softly musky. The palate is wide and ripe with understated but very present tannins. Lovely balancing acidity and good length. This is another wine that you can keep for years – though unlike the Corton, not out of neccessity! Eventually the nose is more fruit driven with sweet oak notes complimenting.

A deep yet quite linear nose that eventually releases some nicely perfumed high tones. Again this is a little plump, but is a little less rich and has nicer balance for me than the bourgogne. Nice understated wine.

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red colour. The nose starts very red, ripe and forward, slowly becoming more interesting – coffee and cinnamon edged. Fresh and sweet, the wine expands in the mouth – nicely lingering flavours. The tannin is very well covered. A very successful and super value wine – heartily recommended.

1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Pommard

Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is wide with a black tinge to the fruit and the beginings of a savoury note at its base – the fruit slowly comes more to the fore, becoming sweeter and fresher. In the mouth the fruit is also rather black and has a really nice purity on the mid-palate. This fruit is currently a little over-shadowed by the grainy, slightly astringent and certainly a little rustic tannin – which I feel could be a little riper. Very good persistence for a village. In terms of the complete package, this is a relative bargain in this vintage – still very young.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Chablis

Medium-pale yellow colour. Wide nose, plenty of high tones over a sweet core. The palate has ‘just-right’ acidity, medium concentrated sweet fruit and a slowly mouth-watering finish. No rough edges this is a super value basic wine.

2001 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambolle-Musigny

By on February 28, 2006 #asides

Medium cherry-red. A lingering nose of cream-tinged cherry fruit. Linear in presentation, an athletic pose though perhaps could do with a little more concentration. Good acidity and understated tannin. The length surprises and is more in line with the depth of the nose than the width of the palate. Tasty and enjoyable but with just a hint of disappointment too.

Bright medium cherry-red. The nose is high-toned with a few earthy notes buttressing the red fruits. The palate is lithe and linear with very good acidity. Shape-wise, this is fit rather than fat with modest tannins and a medium finish. Quite acceptable, but some-way behind the Rousseau version in 2001.
