2000 Mortet Denis Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.Jacques

By on April 30, 2009 #asides

A medium-plus, dense and dark colour. There’s a sweet, slightly burnt note on the nose but it’s not at all ashy – rather there is width and an impression of clay – quite nice actually. Concentrated, showing gras, ripe fruit and background tannins. There is good dimension in the dark/mineral/spicy mold – just lacking the better focus of the 02/01. THat said, this is tasty and easily the most approachable wine so far.

2000 Vougeraie Vougeot Les Cras

By on April 30, 2009 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red colour. The nose is deep, edged with sweet oak spice and more than a hint of cedar – reminiscent of an 04 but less ‘high-toned’. In the mouth this is sweetly ripe and with a little fat in its texture but also a nice core of acidity. Plush but tasty though the decent length finish still shows a little bitter oaky element that has almost become bitter chocolate rather than just ‘bitter’ – a little creamy coconut too – but also some more cedar. For the first hour it was open it was alternately yummy and engaging then herby and bitter, I expected improvement, but instead the palate became a little prickly/pickley. Basically this is all over the place today – unusual for a 2000 – so I can’t recommended it.

2000 Drouhin Joseph Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts

Medium ruby-red colour. The nose is lovely, slightly baked fruit, forward with a ginger edge and some deep herby elements. In the mouth there is sweet fruit but the acidity that comes along is bright indeed sharp finishing – it rather dominates the palate despite the slowly lingering flavours. I can’t get at much else as the problem with the acidity is so prominent. A badly stored bottle? I don’t know, but I can’t recommend this.

2000 Giroud Camille St.Aubin Les Charmois

Medium golden. High tones over slightly creamy base – quite vibrant if not an integrated whole. Ripe fruit offset by slightly bright acidity. Quite long, and certainly very tasty.

2000 Potel Nicolas Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Peuillets

By on June 30, 2008 #asides

The colour is becoming quite mature. On the nose it’s instantly about warm confiture with a powdery core of red fruit. Soft, relatively concentrated and shows a good burst of interest in the mid-palate and decent density – it needs just a hint more acidity for me but the length is good. Overall an interesting and tasty if not covetable wine.

2000 Roblet-Monnot Volnay Robardelles

By on June 30, 2008 #asides

Medium, medium-plus colour. Quite a wide pamorama of high-toned and faintly spicy notes before the depth of faintly plummy, though not obviously over-ripe fruit. Mouth-filling, well-textured, perhaps the acidity is not so seemless, but there’s a nice freshness and tasty width of fruit as you go into the understated finish.

2000 Pavelot Jean-Marc et Hugues Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Dominode

By on June 30, 2008 #asides

Medium colour. Plenty of depth and interest on the nose – black-cherry shaded. The balance is rather good – good acidity and fresh, darker fruit flavours. The tannins have a little bitter chocolate edge, but there’s real depth here – very successful for the vintage, little of the 2000 confiture on the nose and palate. Clearly a little rustic in the finish, but it’s got good length.

2000 Parent Pommard Epenots

By on June 30, 2008 #asides

Narrower aromatics, but super fruit which is ripe but not too ripe. Mouthfilling, again with ripe fruit

that is set against background tannins that still try and cling to your teeth. Very good acidity (not

acidified) and some mineral hints. Really fine for the vintage.

2000 Sigaut Hervé Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots

By on March 31, 2007 #asides

Medium, medium-pale ruby red. The nose is wide with cooked red fruit notes. The palate is soft and sweet, again with a slightly roasted fruit profile. Low acidity and a medium finish – little tannin to speak of. It’s okay, but lacks both freshness and complexity.
