Pavillon

2007 Pavillon Meursault Charmes

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

More depth and density, fruit-driven aromas. Wider and more concentrated, silky yet without apparent fat. Really lovely mid-palate intensity and long finishing. Again, really super.

2007 Pavillon Beaune Clos des Mouches

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Wide and ripe with a background caramel note. Fuller in the mouth with plenty of acidity – though slightly tart acidity behind. Quite a savoury burst in the mid-palate before fading. In 2007 a more mineral impression to this Beaune that the norm.

2007 Pavillon Pommard Les Rugiens

Deep colour. There’s a width and density of a dark fruit, a melange of dark fruit plus a little barrel spice – super. Lots of action and great fruit. Plenty of ripe tannin. This will require cellar time, but it is lovely!

2006 Pavillon Volnay Santenots

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Hmmm – interesting wine. On the first sniff there was a hint of unwelcome aldehyde, on the second it was already transformed to flower petals. Slowly the aromas took on density if not so much depth. The flavour reminded me very-much of recently drunk Santenots – but on checking I was surprised to see that my last two were both from 2005, not 2006. There is width, a smattering of faintly astringent tannin and then a lovely extra dimension of creamy red fruit in the mid-palate. Just ripe enough and nicely plump yet almost good enough acidity. This is a very lovely glass and though perhaps missing a comparative hint of intensity, can stand next a decent bottle from 2005. Based on the price I paid, and by recent standards this is a super value bottle.

2006 Pavillon Pommard Clos Micault

By on March 31, 2008 #asides

Medium-plus colour and showing some purple. Powdery dark fruit on the nose. More intense fruit and again plenty of structure, but the tannin is quite fine and under control – a nice lingering finish too. Should be another value choice.

2006 Pavillon Pommard Les Rugiens

Made me smile when I asked where the vines were located – from the bottom of Hautes I was told! The nose is a little tight, but focused dark fruit and even a hint of coffee. The palate is layered and manages to overcome the big structure. Flavour clings long to your teeth. Very nice!

2006 Pavillon Meursault Charmes

A more forward and intense fruit nose. In the mouth this is very very concentrated and complex with tons of dry extract. Really, really long – clearly a more challenging drink today than the villages, but super quality.

2006 Pavillon Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc

By on March 31, 2008 #asides

A riper and more savoury nose than the Meursault 1er. Ripe fruit, wider but less muscled – also an interesting length. This is a wine that envelops you and is really quite interesting for a white Beaune.

2005 Pavillon Meursault Charmes

By on March 31, 2007 #asides

A wide and deep nose – very forward with hints of butterscotch. Really nice freshness on the palate from very good acidity for a 2005. Perhaps some of the fireworks on the palate are down to a hint of petillance but there’s a lovely, very, very long and creamy finish. This is a super, super wine.
