Potel Nicolas

2007 Potel Nicolas Latricières-Chambertin

By on June 30, 2009 #asides

A very pretty nose, almost a glossy dark-fruit compote. Ripe with very silky texture and darker flavours – really quite complex. The finish is excellent – full-power, then slowly lingering. This is a very good Latricières!

A melange of quite forward red and black fruit notes – gives a soft impression. After the Latricières the tannin seems more grainy, though it’s not particularly astringent. Pretty wine – or maybe I should rather say ‘Charming’.

The aromas are tighter, good depth but little else to start with. Mouth-filling, certainly not the brutality of the 2005, but there remains concentration and quite some intensity in equal measure – very well balanced though. Dark flavours that finish rather long. Eventually the nose develops a toffee-edged red fruit note.

2006 Potel Nicolas Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze

A step-up in just about every direction. The nose is wide and interesting and the palate delivers both depth and dimension. Like the 2005, this is another super Bèze chez Potel.

2006 Potel Nicolas Corton-Charlemagne

deep and savoury nose with just a little background sulfur. Very mineral, soft in texture and widening into the mid-palate and long, long in the finish. This has some understatement for a Charlemagne but the depth and concentration are obvious.

2006 Potel Nicolas Criots Bâtard-Montrachet

A much wider and more complex nose, though some faint estery notes too. Super texture, this wine absolutely stands out for its ceamy complexity in the mid-palate and its awesome finish. I’d only once had a white that ruined the next few reds as its flavour had saturated my palate and refused to leave – that was DRC 2002 Montrachet – this is the second wine to achieve it. Stunning, awesome wine.

2005 Potel Nicolas Chambertin

Medium-plus colour. The first sniff is disappointing – high-toned and alcoholic – but it soon slips into an interesting and deep impression of dark cherry fruit. Good acidity and plenty of well covered tannin, good dimension too. The finish is a very long diminuendo

2006 Potel Nicolas Echézeaux

There is real depth on the nose – like the Gaudichots. More tannin providing extra texture, but there is a more open display of flavour over the palate. Showing much better than any of the Vosne Crus.

2004 Potel Nicolas Clos de la Roche

Medium-plus cherry-red colour. The instant aromatic impact comes from red fruit notes before a stronger, mineral/cedar element takes over. The less wine you have in your glass, the more wonderful it smells, lovely red fruits. The palate is very well filled with concentrated fruit and quite some intensity in the mid-palate. The tannin is not badly textured though there’s a short-lived trace of bitterness – but it comes at the same time as the earthy, dark oak appears on the finish so that bitterness seems to be more wood-based. That length is certainly grand cru without being too showy, though there’s a subtle creamy undertow there somewhere. Overall it shows good ripeness, and nice balance – if the cedar element becomes more subtle this will be lovely, but right now it remains – for me – a questionmark.
