Rousseau Armand

1997 Rousseau Armand Clos des Ruchottes

By on October 31, 2003 #asides

Medium ruby, just a little browner at the rim. The nose has fresh red berries as a top note but if you stop swirling, the glass gradually fills with a vanilla note. The palate is also quite fresh with very good acidity. The wine seems at first to be a little slight despite intense fruit but in the end I put this down to how the primary the fruit was showing – more like a 1996. The tannins are deftly hidden but very velvety. Very, very elegant and very tasty – also just a touch of vanilla on the finish. This excellent wine has gorgeous balance and should have a very long life.

1992 Rousseau Armand Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers

Medium ruby colour. The nose has a hint of undergrowth and characteristic Gevrey earth. Medium intensity palate, nice acidity, though is just a little harsh on the finish. Actually there’s still some tannin here. The wine worked really well with food but seemed lacking a little dimension in its own right – still, isn’t wine supposed to be enjoyed with food?

Medium-plus cherry colour. This has a fine, high-toned nose. Tannic palate but intense fruit to match. Very good acidity too. Last year at this stage I prefered the ‘Bèze’. This year I prefer this.

Deep cherry colour. Very subdued nose, faint cherry perhaps. Intense fruit on the palate with good acidity and medium-plus tannins. This is lovely.

Medium cherry. Very obvious, unsubtle oak on the nose, but there is something sweet and red behind this wall. The oak is a little less obvious on the palate, nice mouthfeel with very good fruit. Still a good wine.

Again medium colour. The nose whilst subdued is more interesting than the previous ‘Ruchottes’. Lovely in the mouth – great fruit. Mouth-watering acidity and good tannin. Excellent.

1994 Rousseau Armand Clos de la Roche

Medium ruby with obvious bricking at the rim. There’s an undertow of red fruit, but the dominant note is of vanilla. The palate is sweet, has good concentration of black cherry and the tannins are absolutely smooth and ‘ready’. The vanilla comes through on the palate too, but still very good.

1996 Rousseau Armand Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers

By on December 31, 2002 #asides

From half. Deep ruby colour to the rim. Nose is deep and chocolatey, almost a little coffee & ginger spice to go with blueberry and black cherry fruit. Fat palate has really concentrated black fruits, good acidity and velvetty tannins. Good length too. This is excellent and although a lovely concentrated glass today, it still seems relatively young.

1996 Rousseau Armand Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze

Deep colour. Nose is closed, though higher toned than the Charmes. High acid, medium tannin, indeed, leaner and less ‘thick’ than the last wine. Not a ‘big’ wine, but very, very long finish. Much ‘fresher’ when compared to the Chambertin – next.
