Chauvenet Jean

2004 Chauvenet Jean Bourgogne

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Quite deeply coloured. A nose of 2004 plus mushrooms. Mouth-filling with some tannin – this is a big bourgogne – and slightly tart acidity. Not much fun here.

Medium-plus colour. A characteristic 2004 nose. Riper fruit than the bourgogne, good tannin and acidity balance – it tastes much better than it smells.

Medium-plus cherry-red colour. High-toned floral notes over fresh fruit. Lots of astringent tannin, good acidity and good fruit. Very young but almost good. Three years in the cellar should tame it a little.

2006 Chauvenet Jean Nuits St.Georges Les Bousselots

Deep colour. High-toned, slightly estery aromas. Wow – now that’s astringent – like sifting sand between your teeth. Good width of flavour but I find the flavour fading quite quickly. This is a toughie that will need some cellar time.

1998 Chauvenet Jean Nuits St.Georges

A relatively narrow and slightly volatile nose – some, though marginal, improvement in the glass. Plenty of minerality and well-managed tannins in the mouth. After the last wines this was found significantly wanting, but even in isolation I think there is a lack of personality here

1993 Chauvenet Jean Nuits St.Georges Les Vaucrains

A medium-plus, young looking colour. Earthy, deep aromas with a mix of black and red fruit coupled to something a little more mature and savoury. In the mouth there is a mix of richness and freshness coupled to astringent tannins that probably ripe enough and certainly on the wane. Still a young showing and very impressive too.
