The morning was wet, but the afternoon was altogether better. We took in the north and the south of the appellation plus some lovely vantage points between the villages that make up Saint-Véran and the views toward Saint Amour and Juliénas…

a little swiss cow action!
In Switzerland, like everywhere else, what goes up, must come down – but particularly in Switzerland, because that also includes the cows!
At the beginning of June the cows are walked up the hikers’ paths to the higher pastures of the Alps, and in September they are walked back down – before the weather changes. The journey’s are celebrated and the farmers and their family dress-up in their traditional costumes – but the cows are dressed-up too, with floral headresses and there are even cow ‘beauty contests’ – taken very seriously by the local folk.
It was a sunny day, so we took a trip out to the Freiburger-Alps and the nearby towns of Charmey and Gruyère for some cow action!
And then onto Gruyère – very pretty indeed!
ta-da…..
Ta-da! Back from 8 days on the island of Sicily.
It’s relatively easy to summarise the time – lots of chilling despite 38°C – sometimes more.
What we liked (usually a lot):
- The people
- The food
- The landscape
- The (nero d’avola) wine – €13-20 in a restaurant…
- Cefalu
- Siracusa – actually the ‘island’ of Ortigia – it’s connected by a couple of bridges. My favourite!
- Our hotel
- Warm brioche with ice-cream!
- 2 espressi for €1.80!
What we didn’t like:
- The litter
- The litter
- The litter
- The litter…
Now back to Beaune – later today a wander in the vines to see how things look – there will be harvesting in 3 weeks!
snow – a ‘burns’ weekend in graubunden…
a little matterhorn…

The one and only Matterhorn (Swiss side!)
You know, of-course, that I like my mountains, and today I took a chance for a quick visit to Zermatt – a surprisingly mere 2h10 on the train from Bern! The forecast is for snow tomorrow, so we took a chance on today – and what a result – beautiful weather. The Matterhorn is often partly obscured by cloud, but not today.
A nice break. Tomorrow, it’s back to Beaune…
