Asides

encore une fois…

By billn on April 21, 2011 #asides#degustation

Another Gambal Bourgogne Blanc 2008 yesterday – that’s more than a case and a half of super, supple drinking.
But I’ll soon be on the lookout for a new house-wine for this year I think – I have a candidate firts bottles arriving at the end of next month… 😉

I was shocked.

I heard yesterday via a bulletin-board, but having made a few calls I can confirm that we have lost Benoit and the funeral is this morning.

I tasted with him at the end of July; he was quite young (late 30s, early 40s was my guess) and was full of energy and enthusiasm he was welcoming very friendly too. He took time off for me from moving his fermentation tanks around the yard – precariously with a fork-lift truck – because he was having a new floor laid in the cuverie (the cuverie away from the Château). Because of this we had to run the gauntlet of smelly of molten adhesive and down the cellar steps and close the door as fast as possible, mainly to avoid suffocation!

Everything in my discussion with Benoit was about the future and he beamed when talking about his wines and vines – and even other peoples vines too! Tasting with him was like banishing the thought that bad wines could even exist.

It was one of the best tastings of the year for me, I feel lucky to have seen him so recently.

I’m still shocked.

hoping the sky doesn’t fall in!

By billn on April 19, 2010 #asides#site updates

In the next few days the whole of this site will be moving to another server. I’m quite sure that this is a tried and tested process and that nothing can go wrong. That said, this is my last entry until all is done – 2 days, 3 days or the sky falling in – we will see.

Signing off – hopefully for a short time….

Don’t worry – no April 1st posts here. (oops…!)
Okay I’ll tell you about decanter tomorrow… 😉

a break from the winter…

By billn on March 18, 2010 #asides

It was clearly the first day of Spring today, maybe not according to the calendar but according to the warmth and for the first time this year the smell of tree blossom – today it is then!!!

Maybe during my lunchtime run I was smelling the blossom a little too much – the result, a broken bone in my hand – you hit the ground pretty fast when you trip, particularly if you’re running. Winded, with (now) nicely developing bruises to the knee. elbow and shoulder, I suppose I should be happy; happy that I didn’t end up one metre to the left – in the Rhein.

It seems, according to the ‘impressed’ doctor that I have a very unusual fracture that will probably need surgery – he was sad that his colleague wasn’t around to take a look. I hope that won’t interfere with my 4 days in Burgundy next week! Anyway my (3 or 4 fingered) typing is far from disadvantaged, I can’t say the same for my mouse-skills though – oh-well!

Anyway, I plan to celebrate my first official broken bone (well there was the skiing incident in 1981, but a nose is only cartilage right(?)), together with the first day of Spring with a bottle of Armand Rousseau’s 97 Clos de la Roche 🙂

smudged spectacle(s)

By billn on March 15, 2010 #asides

I tuned in to watch the ‘spectacle’ of Formula 1 yesterday. Actually, it turned out to be the spectacle of ‘racers’ saving their tyres i.e. not driving too close to car in front! As big an F1 fan as I am, what a waste of 2 hours only to see people following each other, but not too close…
(if I hadn’t been out from bed for only a couple of hours it might have been enough to drive me to drink)
